sr20 exaust smoke.

my car was fine untill the last drift event, ever since then it's been smoking out of the exaust pretty bad. i have no idea why its doing it, or what its from, thats why i'm asking you guys.. it only really does it when i get on it, and SOMETIMES when i'm at a redlight it will smoke really bad. its kind of white with a small blue tint to it. it's a red top sr20det.

anyone have any idea what it is or what causes it? anyone know what it is or how to fix it?

Exhaust that has a noticeable blue tint may be caused by worn or damaged piston rings, failed gaskets or other problems that allow engine oil into the cylinders.

Blue tint = bad. that means your burning oil.

White tint= Burning coolant,

if you want theres a whole bunch of key ways to see whats up with your motor just by exhaust...

Blue smoke means your blowing oil. Could be a lot of things, blown turbo, rings are shot, valve seals are shot. You need to start narrowing things down. Do a compression test, take off your intake pipe to the turbo and check the shaft play etc.

thanks, i took off the intake pipe and found my turbo impeller chipped up pretty badly, and it also has a good bit of shaft play, i was running 13psi on T25 for a while now... do you think its just that i blew the turbo? thats what i'm hopping for, because i'd be stoked just to upgrade to a T28 and for that to solve my problem.

yep, that sounds like what you did.... Killed teh snail.

I would still chk out the compression etc. while your at it, It woudl be a waste to go all to that effort and have bad compression, rings etc.

but overall from that statement, sounds like you killed it. Running on 13psi on a random stock t25 who knows what condition it was in when you got it etc.

good luck with it.

Definitely blown T-25. If you have chipped compressor fins, thats also a sign that you were over boosting. T-25s have a tendency to chip when they go spin faster than theyre supposed to. That could mean you also have a boost leak somewhere pushing the turbo past the 13-14 psi max.

ALso like said, might as well do a compression check. Per FSM, it says 125 psi is still within acceptable limit. Personally, anything less than 140-130 will raise my eyebrow...

will it be safe to run 13psi on a T28 daily? i know its a way better turbo..
i dont have S-afc yet, only fuel upgrades i have is adjustable FPR and walbro 255 fuel pump.. i heard to power band on T28 is insane, my friend said 10psi on a T28 feels like 14 on a T25.. anyone care to share their T28 upgrade experiances?

well t28 bb will spool fast and is good for ~ 300whp, were as the stock t25 is maxed at 250whp, so yeah its got more go for sure. I have a gt28rs(disco), pics of the install here: http://www.teamhpi.org/gallery/v/S14_5/disco/

Right now im on a stock motor again for the time being and plan on running 10psi, should be fine for stock setup. A T28 I wouldn't run past ~13psi without injectors/maf.

how about 2g +? unless you plan on running GT2871r on stock injectors and tuning which is pointless.

let me break it down

GT2871R - 1200 already not to mention you need to mod your intake piping to fit
Injectors - 300
Wideband - another 300
Fuel Controller - SAFC? (crap), bikirom, Haltech, Power FC, Rom tuned? anywhere from 250-800 here

just get S15 T28 dude, best bang for the bucks...250-300whp is PLENTY for drifting

love

Tao

PS stop drifting on 14s, you got power!!!

wow, thought I was ressurecting an old thread, but its not!

Anyway, I [search]'d and found this, same problem with my t25 (big turbo is getting rebuilt)... except it has NO SHAFT PLAY in and out, and only a TINY, TINY bit radially. I dont get any smoke at full boost (running 10lbs), but if I let the engine sit in the In & Out line or a really long signal, it'll start pluming out of the exhaust (blue-ish smoke, definitely smells like my precious mobil 1), then it goes away once I start driving again.

The varying nature of the problem tells me it's not rings, so I guess it's got to be turbo? Just seems weird, given no other warning signs... any info would be great!

TIA

ps - drft103, if you've got $1.2k, you don't have enough money to go big turbo yet (with all the fixins)... if you're thinking 300rwhp isn't enough (like most guys with stock SRs), get the big snail and run it at stock-ish boost until you get injectors/afc/mafs/etc, but I'd say get a great condition used T28 or a new one and your SAFC/emanage.
