I had the same problem in my old SOHC S13 and it turned out to be a loose battery terminal.

Check that, and check the sidemarkers for pinched wires.

Mine affected the front sidemarkers, interior lights, and taillights.

Every time you switch out the fuse and flip on the lights, it just blows up, right?

That happened to me one time My dash lights, turn signals everythings went out......is your light fuse blown out( or does it blow out everytime you put in a new one)? If so that is what was happening with mine and after ripping apart the dash looking for a short ....I got fed up with it and took it to a local shop and it happened to be under the center console...The one for the cigarette lighter (in that area) Check there

Sounds like a fusible link to me?

I've never had a fuse smell and smoke before, but fusible links do that.

It is the wire under the arm rest that goes to the ash tray light. It wears against the body from you leaning on the arm rest. Happened to me a few months ago. I tore my whole car apart and finally found it

There is almost always NO universal answer for an electrical problem.

Trace, and test continuity using a multimeter, you WILL find the short.
