Digital Cluster and HUD into 90 Hatch????

i just bought a totalled 90 coupe, and it has the digital speedometer and hud, how easily can i put this into my non-se 90 hatchback? will the cluster just plug in? or is the signal different? i figure the hud just needs a hole to go through, and mayve a small patch of mirror tint. im gonna do this no matter what, cause if it doesnt just plug in, i can take all the sensors and switch them too, hopefully there will be no need for that though.

AFAIK the cluster just drops in if you use the little jumper harness that comes with the digital cluster.

Should work, I forget who but someone got everything but the hud working, but that was due to not making the cut out yet.

Also keep in mind that there is a special piece of the glass so you can read it.

True. When I replaced my windshield, I was asked if I had the hud or not over the phone. It is a different windshield designed to be "in focus" for the hud. I personally would love my analog gauges with the hud...but not going to happen.

here is a crappy pic of what the glass looks like on the outside.

If you look closely (or add ".orig.jpg" to the url you'll see like a goldish green rectangle where the hud is.

Yeah...it's not just mirror tint...it's some special kind of stuff. I don't think I've seen anything like it for sale.

Someone need to make custom gauges for cars with the HUD option.....

yeah, i know its not just a tint, but i have to whole car, so can i swap the windshield too?? this is going to be a lot of work, but i feel worth it in the end. has anyone ever done a windshield themselves?? and if so, does it always leak??

BTW: if anyone needs parts from a 90 white coupe(has spoiler, alloy wheels, good interior, but no sunroof), except for the engine and front body (fenders, hood, bumper), talk to me, ill give it up REALLY cheap. i have no use for coupe specific parts, and ive already made my money back selling parts to my friend. oh, also no rear filler panel.

considering i bought the whole car for $200, 175 seems rediclious. plus from what im reading it wont be hard, just the tint thing. it works fine at night without the tint, just during the day you cant see it well. i drove a coupe with a HUD for a week a month or so ago, it only seemed to help when it would have a hard time just reflecting.

simple as this

HUD into non-HUD car..what you need
89-90
or 91+

89-90 into 89-90 requires HUD cluster, HUD subharness (plugs back into cluster and onto main harness)
cut of dash for actual HUD or swap dash
direct bolt in

91-94
HUD cluster
HUD subharness
plugs right in
to use actual HUD display, need to cut dash or swap dash
direct bolt in

89-90 HUD into 91-94
wiring modification, RPM swap

91-94 HUD into 89-90
wiring modification, RPM guage swap

basically:
stick w/ the same year cluster as your car
89-90 use 89-90 HUD cluster and subharness
91-94 use 91-94 HUD cluster and subharness

me? I have a 91+ HUD cluster (just cluster) in my 92 fastback base model car love it.

hell yeah, as long as i dont have to go buy more tachs.... im thinking about just switching the whole dash, less work, cause i would have to take it off to cut the hole and do the wiring anyway. can you just call window replacement companies and sell them your windshield?? especially if the HUD one is worth some $$$$?

i dont think you need a new windsheild
call around to some domestic places
a lot of domestcis have HUD sometimes, might be able to get a new sticker to put on window for the HUD, i dont know, worth a shot though!

You can just a piece of window tint. It will work pretty well. You see it on just plain glass, though its kind of light. You could try messing arround with different color tint and see what works well. It's not like the stock hud windsheild is the ONLY way to ever see the hud projection.

ok, i just went and took some parts off the car. the dash is black, so im gonna swap the whole dash, gauges, hud and all. i dont really have to do the tint, itll work without it, but id like it. i went to autozone to look at that do-it-yourself tint, but only comes in big rolls, for $15, so im not doing that. i know some corvettes had the hud, any others?? im gonna call the chevy dealer and ask if they have a sticker or something for it.

hey I just want you to know, I have some experience with a couple areas of what you are trying to do.
first off, I have HUD and my windsheild was broken so I just replaced it with a non hud windshield. it makes the HUD blurry and you can't see it very well during the daytime if the sun is out. If possible you should try and get the HUD glass or at least one of the DEFI stickers (which are 10 dollars or something from takakaira.com). I'm trying to get one right now, or at least some darker tint for that spot.

Second, I am swapping dohc into my 89 so I swapped a tach from an analog car over. The face is bigger and it is not a direct swap. You have to carefully remove the needles and switch gauge faces (you will have the lower redline of the sohc) and then put the needles back. Other than that no problems.

good luck

Defi sells 'replacement' HUD film... i had to order mine thru Taka Kaira, but seeing as how Defi is getting pretty widespread in the states now, one of their importers/retailers could probably order it for you.
