GUTTING the stock muffler???

Ok, I was wondering what my car would sound like if I gutted the stock muffler.
I would have to cut my muffler in half to do this.
I have heard a 240sx before that had no mufler (pretty loud) and i dont want mine that loud, so I thought I may gut half of it or whatever.
Has anyone ever done this?
What are your opinions on sound, outcome, or anything.

Thanks.
Chad
Heres what I think th inner mufler looks like and what I could do to it.

I think it would sound horrible, I don't think having all the sound resonating inside of there will sound good.

ok, then what about removng the catylitic converter, but i heard that makes the car consume more fuel, and smells like raw fuel.

Or i could leave the stock muffler, leave the catylitic converter, an remove the exhaust resonator...

opinions wanted, thanks.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess your car is mostly stock? Its not worth it for various reasons IMHO unless your a highly modded n/a (ie: not just i/h/e) or a turbo 240SX. Search on this subject, its been covered quite a few times.

I guess you just want your car to sound good?

Steps
1. Remove the bottom half of your airfilter box.
2. Cut off all the box only leaving the top edge so that the clips still clip on and the box can still hold the filter.
3. Before putting it back in take out the reesonator box(i believe it si called this) it is the box that the filter box leads to with a pipe, remove the resonator box AND the pipe.
4. If it doesnt sound good enuff and loud nuff go to a muffler place and get your resonator pipe removed.($20)

My car has no cat- magnaflow resonator and magnaflow street series muffler. its kinda loud but sounds awesome, very low and growly. i dont know about fuel economy but it definatly smells like a boat, although i dont really mind it.

I would recommend not doing it. I was curious just like you and I did it about 3 months ago. I was planning on buying a cat-back exhuast the next day I did it, but some **** came up and I didn't have enough money. And I am still driving around like this. It doesn't sound too bad under 3k rpms. But after that, it gets really ricey. Also, I noticed my car doesn't rev clean in gear, it has a point around 3.5k rpms that it kinda studders at then goes like normal.

If you are going for cheap im guessing. Just buy on Ebay one of those N1 Style mufflers and leave your sound resonator on. This sounds pretty decent and sounds much better than a gutted muffler or no muffler.
