Angry Problem with new rear suspension

A friend and I installed eibach prokits and tokico struts together. we did the front suspension first and completed the rear today, but i can tell from driving it home that something is really wrong.

The top of the strut shaft is poking out of the suspension tower, and moving up and down according to bumps in the road. The nut on the top of the strut assembly can't be tightened down due to the strut assembly being so tall and poking out. So basically, the struts which are supposed to dampen do not work, and the car just bounces on the springs.

My friends theory is that either the struts are too long or the springs are too short. is that a possibility?

My theory is that we did something wrong, but we did the fronts just fine and if we did something wrong then we did it to both rear struts.

sorry if this is a bit jumbled, its kinda late and im tired and frustrated.

Can anyone offer a suggestion as to what is wrong?

I don't even understand what you guys did? Did you install all of the upper mount assembly from your old struts? Did you leave any parts out?

Did you install the rubber bumpstops? They usually include a set with the shocks.. If not reuse your stock ones.

This doesn't sound like a bumpstop problem. If he didn't have bumpstops, the shocks would still work but if he bottomed out, his tires would rub his inner fender lining.

i have seen that happen when the strut top isn't assembled properly and the shaft just extends to the full length. (it wil be like riding around on blown shocks)

It might be possible that we missed a stock component, but i used all of the pieces that came with the new struts IE new lock nut for the top, below that goes the retainer, then the rubber things on the top and bottom of the top spring perch.

My friend still insists that the struts are too long

Here's the part numbers:

s13 - TOK8994240
s14 - TOK9598240

Check your box to match the part numbers.

Also, here's a link to an exploded view of the front and rear suspension, check to make sure that ALL parts are where they should be on EACH strut/shock!! You should not have ANY left over parts(except the ones that the Tokico kit replaces)!!!

s14 front suspension: (Page 8)
s14 rear suspension: (Page 11)

s13 suspension

What is the car s14 or s13?

I installed pro kit with KYB AGX. I left out the bumpstop (the rubber thing that is aout inch thick) because it initially wouldn't fit in the rears. same thing happened, the rear rattles.

I immediately stopped the car turned around and parked it. After putting the missing piece back on, there were no problems and the car is totally fine now.

The problem you are describing sounds exactly like mine. If you have any rubber pieces missing, try putting it back?

sounds to me like an installation error.

If the strut rod is bouncing up and down through the top of the strut tower, then you did not attach the spring hats to the strut rod.

Take them off your car, and make sure the strut rod is attached to the hat.

They aren't too long. If they were too long you would just bottom the struts. The rod would not be bouncing up and down through the strut tower opening.

-charles - who thinks that must be a silly sight..
