dropped the timing chain...#$^@

well, i took the head off of my s13 sr20. while taking out the cams i had the chain suspended from the ceiling by fishing line. well when it came time to remove the head i snipped the line and the chain fell. it didn't fall into the front cover , just between the 2 guides. i promptly pulled it back out and i don't believe it skipped any links. is there any way i can be sure? i would really like to avoid taking off the front cover...

just be sure that when you put the Head back on the Silver Links on the chain line up with the marks on the cam gears. U know what I mean?

well, we marked the chain and cam sprockets with a black sharpie in 3 places on the chain. so i know we can line it back up perfectally. the real problem is that to line the sprockets and the chain up you have to put the head back on. and then if its wrong...take it back off.

i may end up having to do this i just want to see what my options are. anyone else dropped their chain and ended up being ok?

Well the chain wont skip on the bottom. Theres a thing on the fuel pump cover that will keep the chain from skipping when sheit like that hapepns. But if you still dont feel comfortable, you can drop the oil pan and look form underneat behind the baffle to see if the gold mark is where its supposed to be at on the main crank. 5 o'clock position iirc.

with the motor at tdc and the crank on the second mark, you should be able to count exactly 8 links starting from the timing chain guide to the silver cam link. So pull the chain taught to the intake side chain guide. From the top of the guide the silver link on the intake side will the 8th link. Same for the exhaust side

Before you attempt to start the car, crank the engine over by hand for at least 4 revolutions. Do this with the spark plugs out and the negative battery cable disconnected. If you feel any unusual resistance, your valves and pistons are meeting each other (meaning, the chain wasn't installed properly).

cool. that is what i wanted to hear. do you mean the entire oil pan assembly or just the steel pan? we marked the chain and sprockets with a sharpie in 3 places so i know that it will be lined up right.

according to the FSM it should be on the correct gear, if the silver links line up with the marks. that is how you know. the silver link lining up with th emarks on your cams if that checks ok the youre good. other wize. well good luck. it;s oging to be fun. :-D

one more question. while reading through the fsm i was trying to find a section on turning the crank by hand. i found nothing. so we cranked it clock wise to get to the second pulley mark. jsut wanted to make sure that it can be cranked to the left or right.

i've also been doing some research and the silver and gold links are really only good for installing a new chain. otherwise it is all dependant upon how the cams are placed. can anyone with experience confirm this? it makes sense seeing as how cam position is what determins the valve lift not the chain.

you can turn the crank either way but id turn it clock wise just cuz its me. As far as the chain, yah true it all depends if the gold link is actually put in properly. Like i said before if your really anal and wanna make sure, drop the oil pump and the oil pan buffle and you should be able to see the crank sprocket witht he chain on it. The gold chain should be on the 5 o'clock position. If not then, you can try to wing it and line up your exhaust cam on the 12 oclock position and count the chain link for the intake. Cant remember the exact number of links *but you can count the silver links and use that as a reference* The intake should be roughly on the 10 o'clock position.
