rear caliper question (s14)
i have a base model zenki....no abs. about 4 months ago i went to change the pads in the rear and the drivers side piston would not go down all the way to allow the pad to fall into place like the other side and i was in a hurry so i forced the pads on there (yea, stupid, i know)....but the same said caliper/rotor/assembly is heating up real bad....and the pad on the outside can be moved around inside the caliper when the ebrake is not up..almost like it doesnt fit or something? the pad also clanks around when driving, until i engage the brakes......
what could this be? do the brakes need to be bled or something>? is my caliper fucked up>?? ahh i dont know what it is and its killing me.....pls give me some insight! |

also, forgot to say that after driving for a while, my pedal will go almost all the way down to the floor before the brakes start working....then it will pump right back up.....is this because of the extreme heat or force on them?

I did my brakes in December all the way around on my s14 and I think we used a large c-clamp to push the piston back (with the bleeder open to relieve pressure). Then when re-installing the pads, the main thing was to make sure the tab on the backside of the pad was lined up with the piston so it sits properly in the caliper. This is the best I can remember since it was a while ago and my dad was helping me (I make a better gopher than he does, lol).
You may want to jack up the rear, take off the wheel, and inspect the wear of the pads -angled, uneven, flat - and go from there. on my old eclipse, the swing arm/slider portion of the caliper froze in place and would not release, thus the rotor got hot and wore the pads at a really bad angle. |

if your brake pedal is dropping and not engaging, you might wanna bleed your brakes. If that's not it, you should check the brake lines and ensure nothing is snapped or worn out. Stock brakelines are rubber, and naturally over time they will wear out from the flexing/pressure etc etc.
If the pad is clanking around inside your caliper, you need to reinstall the pads. . They should not be moving around much. Like irritatedmax said, ensure that the tabs are lined up and the such. I'd say the best thing to do is to get the ride back on the jack and take your time and do it right. Better not to rush than chance getting into an accident. |

Yes, go to any auto parts store like AutoZone or PepBoys and ask where the brake piston caliper tool is. In my experience, it's a PITA if you don't have the tool.
Yeah, and get that brake fluid/lines/master cylinder checked out..sounds very inconsistent and dangerous.
