HELP! Daily Driver Down!!

well, i have to be at work right now.... all i did was take out my old dash and gauge cluster, and put in a new ones.

im fixing to do a sohc to dohc swap, and i figured that i should go ahead and swap out the gauge clusters while im at it. bad idea i guess.

the new cluster randomly reads the tach, and it does speed fine.
i know its not going to read it right

please help so i can get to school and work!

it is a known fact that sohc guage cluster doesnt work with dohc swap. the tach signals are different. speed sensor works. thats why ppl who do dohc ka/sr swaps use the dohc guage cluster or swap tachs.

to fix this, swap back your sohc gauge cluster or just the tach.

What do you need your tach for to get to work? Just drive it and fix it tomorrow.

sorry, i had to write this in like 30 seconds before i bumed a ride to work.

i was replacing a dash in my 1990 sohc 240sx. i have plans, and the engine, to do a dohc swap. i put the new dohc cluster in knowing that it wouldnt read right. i went ahead and did this because the dash was off and stuff.

i went to drive it, and its studdering, skipping like its off timing or something. no power. it doesnt make sence that swapping a different gauge cluster would do this? thats litterally all i did.

Swapping clusters won't have any difference on the way the motor runs. Now something you left unplugged while the dash was off might. The only thing I am not sure on is if you have to use a dohc cluster harness with the dohc cluster and sohc with sohc. I am pretty sure it will work with either harness though.

DE cluster will show speed on the SOHC, and vice versa... but the rpm's wont read right unless your engine matches the cluster... someone correct me if im wrong.

You're right, I just did the swap last weekend, You need the SOHC cluster and the DOHC tach, to work with the ''DE'' swap. The SOHC tach doesnt work at all after the swap.
As for your problem, I would first, check fuses, installing the dash and gauge pod could have poped a fuse, than I would pull the dash and go back through what you did, They're right that you might not have hooked somthing up, or you could have inadvertantly pinched somthing in the install. I used the SOHC harness under the dash, and built a jumper to connect to the ECU, sorry this so long, GOOD LUCK.

Not to pick on you, but the entire cluster minus tach will work on any S13. The tach follows the engine. SOHC and DOHC are NOT interchangeable.

Sounded like you said that you need SOHC cluster to swap to DOHC. You can use a DOHC cluster as well, which is actually the best way to do it since it will have the DOHC tach for you.

Good avice all around though.

I used my SOHC pod, and only changed the DOHC tach. I know you can use both, I wanted to use the SOHC pod.

That's cool you found it, At least you did'nt have to pull the dash again, I put in a dash last summer, not bad, but I do'nt want to do it twice in a row.
