![]() Hi, I was wondering if have some help making a rim width decision. I have an 96 s14. Hear is the problem 17x8 or 17x9 front and rear. I want the same size rims front and back along with tires for equal balance. Normally I would go with the 17x9, but the 17x8 are 1.2 lbs lighter. I would be running 245 width tire and around 360-380hp. Also am I going to run into rubbing problems in the front. Thanks for your help.

first of all...1.2 lbs is a small sacrifice to get a wider wheel. Especially if you reach your power goals. Plus a 245 will fit better on a 9" wide rim and you can go wider later if you want where you would be limited with a skinnier rim.
As far as rubbing goes. You need to post the offset of the wheels since that will determine whether or not it's gonna fit.

yah im looking at rims right now too, I really want a 17x9 but there is limited offering in 4 lug and im NOT spending money to convert to 5 lug, thats silly, although im prolly gonna get bashed, anyhow, I think im going to have to go 8 inch, I wanted to run a 245 but might just go with a 235, i also will have a hp range similar to yours. well see what happens. but yah if your only concerned with the wheight, then forget it, the extra inch is well worth it in my eyes, as long as you get a good offset.

there are LOTS of 17x9 decent offset 4 lug wheels out there...you just have to do some hunting...
i would go 17x9 no question...you wont have fitment issues assuming you choose your offset correctly...anywhere in the +15 range and you will be fine... |

yes but when s14db showed me this:
![]() I immediately tried to find a local eastwood roller that might be circulating the Michigan streets, btw I just ordered these 17x9 +20 for s13 in hyper black, with some 245/40 MX's |

with 245's you will at least need a roll. nokeone was probably running 215/45's or something. Obviously, the car you posted is on a shock/spring combo which is a toally different world then when your running coilovers as far as fitment goes....I swear I have seen pics with those size/offsets and 235's without a pull and they cleared but I could be wrong and I'm too tired to go look for it now

you are correct..i run 215/45 up front and 225/45 rear so yeah it's a little easier i guess.. sorry about that... buuuuut i still think it would be a very easy fit with minor effort on your part regarding the fenders...coilovers and a lil camber do wonders for fitment also.. yeah, hammered fenders, no pull required... do it!..it's easy and you will love how it looks when your wheels fit nicely.. ![]() |

rolling fenders does not require some stupid fender roller
just like neokone said hammer and some time done rolled and way faster and costs maybe 12 bucks for the mallet. |

more info and questions
Does the extra inch of rim outway the advantage of the 1.2 lbs lighter wheel. The Offset I would run 17x8 30 or 35, 17x9 21 or 30. So I will need to buy wide body fender (20mm wider) or roll the fenders.

Do yourself a favor and go with the 17 x 9's. Are you running coilovers? If so, you'll need to get around a +20 or lower offset to use that size tire in the front. If you're making that kind of power, then 1.2 lbs per wheel is so negligible considering the wider track that the 9" wheel will give you. Put it this way, it's the difference between having 40 lbs/corner or 38.8 lbs/corner. And unless this is a dedicated track car, most of us would never be able to tell the difference.

Even if it IS a dedicated track car... with that power, the need for wider wheels heavily outweighs the weight savings. I mean.... if F1 cars (dedicated track cars in the utmost sense) were so concerned about this 1.2 lbs per corner of unsprung weight (it'd make a much larger difference on F1 car than a 240sx) then why wouldn't they go from a 13x15 to a 13x12 (a 1 inch decrease in wheel width is not going to produce the same weight savings as your commercially available 17x8/17x9s. Those are extremely heavy compared to an F1 wheel).
F1 car needs a 15 inch wide wheel. Your car needs a 10 inch wheel but for some reason you are limiting yourself to 8 or.. MAYBE 9. Go for 9 no questions asked. i would go 9 in front 10 in rear. Any day of the week. |

i know people are going to knock the name, but you could get Motegi Touge's.
they have a variety of 4 lug sizes. 17X9 +24, 18x9 +12, and 18X10 +30. i don't know if you'll need rolling with the 18X9's. also, consider what tires you'll be using. if you buy 245/40/17 falken zeix 512, or the FK452, you'd be better off buying a 17X8, taking the weight savings and cash savings and buying a better tire like the azenis 615 or advan 048 in 225/45/17 |

-10 points for that last post.
a.) Suggesting Motegi Touges b.) For running a norrower rim and tyre c.) Canada Fail. Why not run 17x9 and a 245 RT615 (or imho Advan AD07) |

I agree that if it's between a 9" and 8" get the 9", but you could still run a 245 on an 8" rim. And you find 4/5 lug combo rims all the time on yahoo auctions for very good prices/sizes/offsets. I'm actually thinking about buying a shitload and selling them here, haha.

i'm fairly certain that a 225/45/17 RT-615 will outgrip f 245/45/17 Ziex 512...the ziex isn't a performance tire at all, it's for you to put on your mom's Accord to drive to the grocery store every day
