Installing clutch fan question (sr20)
Quick question: When installing the stock clutch fan on an SR20, does the clutch fan mounting "plate" sit flat on the water pump pulley or is there a space?
Details: I'm ditching my electric fan and switching over to a clutch fan that I bought off of someone. When I started installing it yesterday, I noticed that it wouldn't mount flush on the water pump pulley. After removing the 4 nuts on the pulley, the fan plate would only mount partway over the center (rusty) hub piece on the pulley. IF it was able to mount all the way to be flat on the pulley, then the fan blades would be hitting the crank pulley when it spins. So I tried mounting the clutch fan plate on top of those 4 nuts, but I noticed that there isn't much thread left to hold onto for the 4 nuts that I added. Is this normal or do I maybe have the wrong clutch fan? It's possible the guy sold me the wrong one... Thanks for your help. |

other guys with clutch fans are running a lot cooler than i am. i'm pretty sure that switching to the clutch fan plus the Trust oil cooler i just installed will help get my temps down. |

yeah neko buddy going w/ the clutch fan! good man!
chop the top of the shroad too. i have a koyo and both s13 and s14 fan shrouds fit perfect on the koyo. works a-ok on the fluidyne radiator too i have electric fans on the radiator stll, wired up thrua switch. maybe for emergency use?? no idea. whatever they came w/ the radiator. as far as not fitting maybe sand it down, its apretty tight fit, might have to much rust, should fit pretty good. quite snug iirc. my clutch fan i regularly run at 75-80c at the track. |

how much did you cut your fan shroud and did you put it on which clutch fan in already. How did you fit it in? It's soo damn tight, it seems like I have to slide out the radiator to fit it in

yo dousan, yeah man i took your advice. old school clutch fan for life!
how is chopping the top of the shroud supposed to help? how much did you chop yours back? as far as fitment, my shroud fits fine over the koyo and it only hits the intercooler pipe a little bit. i would put on an e-fan for a backup, but there's no more room since i mounted the greddy oil cooler in front of my radiator (i didn't want to put it in the fender). even if i sanded down that center part, the clutch fan blades would be whacking the crank pulley. so i'm looking for an SR clutch fan... luke dogg: you should be able to install the shroud on the koyo. make sure you remove the shroud's side and lower pieces, the top radiator hose, and intercooler piping to make more space before you put it in. |

when my friends came over from japan (d1 drivers and adm and d1sl drivers) they helped me with some things on he car, misc advise what to do...and said chop the top. i know kumakubo told bwalker to do the same thing
them: 14 years+ expirience vs me: 3 years...yeah ok boss. i wonder if ugot the if u got the right fan? hmm its hitting stuff maybe he gave u a ka fan? but even that might fit, not sure. ![]() my god me engine looks horrible, i cleaned it up a lot..removed and fixed some stuff...redoing my intercooler soon too. and that intake piping..bleh! |

yeah, i've seen people do it but i wonder how it helps. maybe it helps to pull more air and cool the engine bay more. or maybe if you have a hood vent it helps to flow more air through the vent... hmm...
i found out that i definitely have the ka fan, so time to call the guy i bought it from and search for an sr fan. oh yeah, i also got one of those greddy breather tanks that you were recommending last time we talked! very nice product and install was a breeze. bleeding the system will be a lot easier now. Q: when you've fully filled the system and warmed it up, how much should i fill up the coolant? all the way to the top of the breather tank? the instructions weren't very specific about this, but i already swapped the caps (rad and breather) like the instructions said. |

yeahi think its at the top i never check mine haha
i have to see...hmm i got rid of that crappy no presure cap, mine failed, so watch out! i put a stock cap or z32 or whatever i had on the radiator and another one on the breather. so far no problems. got a double tarck event weekend this weekend so ill see everything goes, should be a warm weekend! if not a HOT weekend..ugh. yeah w/ my hood vent it helps but even w/o the vent the said it..so i dont know...maybe flows out and over faster? |

Yeah Neko, there's a difference between the KA and SR fans.
The SR fan's "mounting ring" is offset as far as the depth goes, and the KA's "mounting ring" is in the middle, and thus won't clear the crank pulley. |

Anyways, i've been driving around with it on the way it is now (i.e. fan plate mounted on TOP of the pulley nuts w/ only a couple threads holding them on). yikes. if those nuts come loose then i will get Dousan's instant-chopped-shroud mod (TM) and save myself some time... ![]() |

So, you mention that most of the guys with the chopped shrouds have vented hoods... do you think it would be any less effective with a stock hood? It looks ugly as beans, but if it makes a difference in cooling, I'll cut that shit this weekend. I haven't even heard of most of those guys you mention man, hahaha... theyre like hella JDM cats. You should introduce me to all these people you know. ![]() |
