if you want to cancel out your power steering... take off the PS belt..

240's dont have manual racks, they are ment to be pressurized. Ghetto no power steering (ie taking off ps belt) will not benefit you in drifting... you will end up fighting the steering wheel to try and counter, and the steering wheel will always win.

so keep your PS.

now... if there were manual racks, this would be totally different

having no power steering is balls. I haven't had power steering for about half a year now and it sucks. but I have heard from someone that if you drain the power steering fluid the steering becomes easier. he also said that its more responsive. I haven't tried it so don't take my word for it.

It's a good thing the power steering belt on a ka doesn't turn the water pump or anything. :ghey: Not good blanket advice to give.

To original poster, definitely not better for drifting. Much worse.
Keep power steering.

I drove for a long long time without PS, I guess its kinda useful for top speed kinda stuff, I felt much more in control going 110(mph)+, but for mountain roads its ok as long as the road is simple. Some other the turns are really tight which could be troublesome.
When I got PS back, the car's handling felt so light (after like 2 years w/o PS) it was like I was controling it with my mind. IMHO, for everyday use its more convenient to have it than not to. If anything disenguage it, see what you think, and if you don't like it, hook it back up again.

who ever told you to drain the ps fluid in the rack is dumb. with out fluid in the rack there is nothing to lubricate the seal and will eventualy brake seals and it will eventualy seize, and that would be a pretty bad thing to happen on a mountain road... or any road for that matter. if you want to run with out power steering just make a return loop from the inlet to the outlet on the rack and you will be fine.

The column is also designed for ps, which means they use a skinnier shaft then they do if it was designed for no power steering, Ive heard of people breaking them due to the stress over years of no PS. anyway right now I have no PS becuase sr didnt come with the PS pump, cuz RACEUP AND RICKEY ARE COMPLETE DOUCHEBAGS (ok i got that out) anyway im looking for a decent priced pump, and then ill deffinitely be putting it back on, it sucks and is a pain in the ass to drive it. really the only time it sucks is when im getting out of my driveway, other than that its alright and does really feel like your in control of it when turning and going fast. but ehh well see.

I've driven a few cars that either never had powersteering, or was taken off, and it kind of sucks. For me at first, since its unique to drive, it was kind of fun. But if you wanna get serious with your driving, its a beezy to drive with that, especially drifting, you basically have minimul amount of steering. I would not suggest it.

I actualy have an S13 with no PS. I have been with out for a good 9 months, love it. It sucked when I broke my wrist, but its all good now, PS feels kinda.... fake in a weird way, I find drifting very nice with out it, its just a little more of a work out, but now that Im used to it, I like it better than having it. The reason I did with out, I had a leak on the high preasure hose and the pump started whining, so I looked into disabling till I could get it fixed, I just took the pump apart and gutted it so it just free spins(ka, gotta have it) left the fluid in, and it works great. Im a little more muscley now too, as I was kind of a weekling before. It sucks parking, but above about 10mph, I dont even hardly notice that its harder, its just a little more deliberate.

I like my lack of power steering on my hachi.

On s13 and S14 power steering pumps you can take the pump apart and remove some of the fins, I have heard that if you take out half the fins you will still have some assist, but also gain a lot of feel. I want to try it like that when I get another 240
