Ac Setup With Redtop

Hey Im gonna use the ka ac assebly to bolt into a s14 with a redtop in it the way that it is explained in this thread. http://forums.freshalloy.com/showthr...light=Official

Now what all parts from the ka will I have to buy to make it work? I dont have any ka parts for ac. Or would it be easier to just get custom lines? I just dont have either the sr or ka lines and they have been hard to find.

It's a bad link but you have 2 options:

1: Get a clutch and pulley from a 95/96 Pathfinder with the 3.3 in it

or

Do what I did:

2: Custom AC Bracket. I made it out of steal, and moved the ac compressor forward (to line up with the pulley) and down (to clear the bracket).

I couldn't be happier, as after the SR install tonight, even the stock AC lines fit

just a question...whats holding the bottom part of the compressor or are you just running it off 2 bolts?

What about the tensioner? I like your idea for custom brackets but that totally eliminates the A/C compressor bracket and the tensioner is attached to it

Thats what I said too. Living the northeast, I made it a point to have full working heat, defrosters, powersteering, and air conditioning

I know it gots much hotter temperature wise in the Southwest...or say the Sandbox(I spent a 2 weeks at NTC at Death Valley in July, and a year in OIF), but NOTHING can compete with the humidity here! And, in all reality, you're not loosing that much power from the stuff (not that it would matter anyways)

Is there some reason you can't use SR AC parts?

I'm S13, so maybe I'm just misunderstanding a logistical issue of some sort? But I used all stock SR parts and just had custom lines made so I had more flexibility in my engine bay.

That bracket is so simple, yet damn slick, good job codyace

Did you have AC shop make the lines for you? If so, how much it cost you?

well i cant use my sr parts cause i dont really have any of them except for the compressor. Also my compressor was never sealed when the install was done so thats probably faulty as well.

Thanks for the kind words! I too got frustrated at looking all over 3 different forums for a solid answer, so I decided to take action into my own hands! I was seriously about 10 minutes from just slapping on the SR compressor, and heading to a Freightliner dealer that our shop deals with to get the lines made up...

There are 4, however I'm only utilizing the top 2 for now. The original 4 bolts only engage the bracket by roughly 1/2" inch, so I decided to make the relocation bracket out of 1/2" steel. Being that I look at and deal with big truck and general cars/trucks daily, I made it a point to check out other systems on how they were all mounted. I concluded that by using the 1/2 steal, and tapping it for the compressor mount bolts, would be more than strong enough to hold the AC compressor up there and while engaged.

I will however be dipping into the idea of making a lower one as well when I have more free time.

Unfortunatly no. I got fed up with seeing threads on F/A about 'custom brackets' being made for 125 dollars, and another member pawning their custom billet ones, so I took a few measurements and went to town. To be honest with you, it was a first time fitment go for me, so what you see is also the prototype

As I said above, I was seriously walking to my car when I saw the piece of steel sitting there...it was like a sign or something!

I can't remember 100 percent for sure on the total bracket size, but if I had to estimate, it is between 4.5"/4.25" long, by about 1.5" tall....The holes are 3 5/8" apart for the main mounting points, with 2 bottom ones being roughly 1" down, and EXACTLY 1/4" to the front...

As for the bar of steel itself, I just took the edges of it to the grinding wheel to smooth them out and finish it.

Also, with this bracket, I didn't need to bend the A/C line AT ALL, and it also clears my stock manifold+gt287r WITH my custom actuator bracket as well...

Not a clue in the world I have actually never even looked at or have seen a CA18det in my life, so I couldnt' even give a rough estimate.

Yes. If you just bolt the top two bolts of the KA compressor onto the redtop bracket, it will be exactly 2 belt ribs (1/4") short, and it will miss the powersteering bracket by probably 1 or 2 mm! To close for comfort in my book! Purchasing a pathfinder setup will move it out the needed 1/4 inch and should work fine

Why was a bracket needed for the KA compressor? The two front bolts bolt up perfectly. It even lines up to the belts. The only thing I did was grind down the AC bracket, The KA pully actually hits it. Then bend the lines alittle becaue it's in the way of the intake. That's what we did on Squidd's car. runs great.

I have an sr compressor on my sr20 and i'm going to be making custom low pressure lines. Only one line bolts up correctly. the other line from the firewall doesn't line up. Get the Sr end that bolts on the compressor, then mate it with the KA line.

Not sure how yours lined up and the rest of ours didn't? Perhaps s13/s14/s14a A/C compressors are different? Maybe the S13 blacktop/s14 blacktop a/c compressor brackets are different??? Not sure why they would be though....

My setup is s13 redtop in a 1997 s14.

Low side lines would perfectly enable you do have A/C, but making your own bracket is easy and free.

KA24DE AC compressor bolts up to S13 SR and S14 SR. Red or black top doesn't mater. the bracket is different, but bolts up fine. only the two front bolts goes on.

DOHC car, one lines bolts up to SR AC compressor. This is why most make custom lines instead, it's not even that hard actually.

That is a great thread, and in fact that is also what helped me in deciding to make the bracket (like the One Ton Garage one)...


I guess it all comes down to what is easiest at the time. Being that I have the ability to use steel/aluminum from our shop to fab up things, I've always found it easier to custom make things...

Plus, if I used the SR compresssor, I'd be to tempted to use some of the R12 we have for older trucks instead of converting it to 134a ...
