so...I just hooked up the s13 speed sensor on my tranny to my s14 car. Went for a drive and the MPH is ridiculous. When I'm driving like 45mph it says that I'm going 120mph or higher! What is the difference between the s14 and s13 VSS? My understanding is that they simply work off the principle of magnetic induction; it's just a coil, right? I just want to KNOW precisely why it doesn't work. thanks

You can't use an s13 sensor on an s14 tranny. The pinion gear is different.

maybe I got the polarity reveresed? I hooked up the green to red and black to red/yellow. I"m thinking about switching them around and seeing what happens

No, you didn't reverse the polarity. the gearing is different between the 2 sensors.

You need a S14 VSS. They have different pulse widths,

Use the VSS that matches the cluster. Nothing else matters. I know I've typed that a dozen times this year alone.
