s13, '92 hatchback. i'll say that now.
first off, do i have to take off my door panels, or are the little panels covering the speakers just sticky? taking off the panel is no biggie, i just wanna know... next, i've heard that you can cram 6.5" speakers up there, which is good b/c i've still got my 6.5 rockfords from my old car, and personally i think 4x6's suck. so, are there any instructions for doing this, or am i going to have to wing it and use a lot of dynamat? |

4x6 indeed. I replace two sets of speakers...one with power windows, one without. Its a fairly simple procedure. Just remove a few screws and the panels will pop off. Then its just reverse for putting them back on.

You will have to take the door panels off to get to them. Also, you don't need a custom enclosure for the door. Just build some custom Baffles. Get some 1/4" Birch or MDF if it's available. Use the 4x6 mounting plates to build a baffle around the screw holes. But make sure you leave areas for the plastic snaps to go back in the door. Took me a couple tries to get it just right, but it's well worth it in my opinion. 4x6's suck balls. 6.5's are WAY better.

4x6's don't necessarily bite, depends on the quality of speaker you buy. I shelled out a little extra for a higher quality 4x6, and I'm more than happy. Just depends on what you're willing to spend. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='
![]() Now in my 90' s13, I could fit a little bigger than 4x6 into the hole, just need some melting action for the plastic bracket. However much work you want to do, is up to you. Good luck. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=' ![]()

You don't have to take the door panel off completely. When I changed mine, I just took it off enough to unscrew the speaker grilles. There are 4 screws holding it on from the inside of the panel. Then you can just take the grille off and work on it through the hole. I thought it was a lot easier than taking the whole panel off, but you might be different. Just another option for you.

the panel is REALLY easy to take off. You take out 2-3 screws (depending on door) pop off the plastic retainers, pull out the bottom of the door with a swift stern jerk, then do same to the sides. Then just lift straight upwards. Your done. I an take the panel off in under 5 min.

excellent, i'll try my hand at installing my 6.5's when the car comes back from the shop tomorrow. gettin' a new clutch, oh boy.
as for quality 4x6's... when i bought it, it had 2-way pioneers all around- the most expensive ones best buy sells (yeah, i know, bet buy doesn't sell great stuff... but still), and it sounds like crap... course, i'm coming from a car that had 6.5's up front and 6x9's in the rear. thanks guys... |
