1.5 lsd or 2 lsd which would work better
this is frustrating

ok I am currently building my 240 sx and have gotten stuck on the absolute dumbest of decisions. a 1.5 lsd is what is used in most daily driven cars right? so would a 2 lsd mean that it would be harder to drive daily also a 1.5 costs $600 less than the 2 so if a 2 is ok to drive daily is it worth it?

yes I know the 2 is technically a 2 way lock and I know what a 1.5 is as well....

Do you know the difference between the two?
What are you planning to use the car for?

I want to use the car for drifting mainly for fun in a few competitions a year and with my friends all I know about lsd's is that they lock the two rear wheels together so when going into a drift you can easily power over right before the apex...

1.5 way diffs do not cost 600 bucks less than 2 way diffs. Hell, I'd like to see a shop that even stocks 1.5 way diffs, most don't because it's pointless. That is, if you're going to get a clutch-type LSD, then you might as well go for the most agressive setup there is, because you want it to lock, and lock hard. I daily drive a 2-way diff, and it's no problem whatsoever. It pops and clunks when making slow speed turns, but it's no big deal.
If you're not going to track your car, then why bother getting a 2-way diff? If anything, find a VLSD, or just leave it alone. -C |

its easy...a 1.5 way diff does not lock under decel which gives you better turn in and less understeer for stuff like autocross and time attack...a 2 way diff locks under decel which either makes you understeer going into the corner or pitches the ass end way out for drifting...if you do anything other than drifting go with the 1.5 way...as far as daily driver you dont need either. Go get a VLSD or a helical...clutch type diffs are a waste of money if you dont track your car.

how much of a difference is it for DD between the two? is 1.5 just as good as a 2way for drifting? im not really going to track my car that much since i drive it daily.

A 1.5-way locks under decel as well, just not a 100% lock. It's about a 50% lock, that's why it's called 1.5-way.
And if you know how to drive a car equipped with a 2-way LSD and have the suspension set up for the 2-way LSD, corner entry understeer can be overcome. But for most people, the 1.5-way LSD is better for grip type driving, and a 2-way is better for anything that requires the LSD to be locked 100% during both acceleration and deceleration. As for 1.5-way LSDs costing $600 less than a 2-way LSD, I honestly don't know of any that have such a dramatic difference in price. Maybe if you were talking about a 1.5-way Metal LSD versus a 2-way Carbon LSD from Carbonetic/ATS or something, but even then, the difference is much less than $600. |

I daily drive on my 2way and I love it! Sure it makes noises and you get looks, but who cares! As long as it does what it was made to do.
![]() Agreed, if your not going to track or drift your car get a VLSD. |

I have a kazz 2-way, I hated it for dd untill I added some of that ford friction modifier, now my car has a 2-way that is daily driveable, that is not to loud, and still locks up very hard. I would go with a 2-way over the 1.5 way.

Expert throttle control can only be achieved with a true 2-way. A 1.5 way may operate about the same as a 2-way in most situations, but the 1.5 falls short in some aspects, such as corner-entry lift throttle inertial thrift. You cannot be clumsy with a 2-way. Too much or not enough throttle at the wrong time will upset your balance and send you into a spin. You may want to take it easy for a while until you get the hang of the 2-way. |

For a drifting virgin you should get a 1.5, if you want a 2 way keep an extra pumpkin that you can swap out. Don't DD a 2 way... they wear out with time and use. I would buy both and break in a 2 way swap the diff oil and keep it for trackdays.

I know I'm going to get go from 5 greens to 15 reds for saying this...
But fuck it go with a welded diff if the price is really an issue. A welded diff is a fully locked differential and is 100% locked all the time. I have daily drivin a welded lsd for almost 2 years and have beaten the snot out of it too, and it just ask for more. But if you want to have fun, learn to drive, care if you car chrips tires when trying to park... get a stock VLSD. Other wise you really are just throwing away money for something you really don't need.

A welded diff does not yield, at all. So unless your goal is to soley slide the rear out, the welded will work great.
Even 2-way LSDs, before they reach the inital torque value, will not be locked, so you can actually feed some throttle into a corner and not have the diff in locked mode, thus allowing yourself to enter into the corner without the understeer, and when you've reached the point to accelerate out of the corner, you feed in more throttle, and the initial torque on the LSD is met and locks, providing you traction out of the corner. Same scenario with a welded diff would be harder to pull off since the welded diff doesn't unlock at all... you can play with weight transfer, but at the end of the day, the diff doesn't unlock, your wheels are turning the exact same speeds no matter what. |

ok i dont know if this is a dumb question . but i was thinking about getting the welded differential thats available from shockdrifting.com and i was wondering if the differential will put strain on the suspension while driving in the street? my car will be my DD for a while until i get my coupe running good enough to rely on it not breaking down..

the tires give out before any suspension components will, hence the chirping

How will having a welded diff put strain on your suspension?
Suspension will work the way they do normally, doesn't matter what kind of diff you put on your car. The only time that you will notice your suspension "being loaded up" is when neither of the sticky as hell tires you put on the back of the car want to slip and turn at a different rate, so the rear of your car kinda squats, and you're trying to get on the throttle to get out of this slow corner. You'll hear your exhaust go "wah-wah-wah-wah" as the engine's trying to rev but the tires aren't spinning/chirping so the rear end just kind of bounces. This is with 225/45/17 Kumho MX tires in the rear and welded diff. |

I remember talking to Ray from Kazz and he told me that many of his time attack customers actually use 2-ways. He said it allowed them to brake a whole lot later than those running 1.5 ways. Driving style affects what kind of LSD you wanna run also. Just something to think about.
