WHY won't it start?

I have a 93 240 (all stock) that doesn't want to start. I originally thought the starter was bad, but after replacing the starter relay, it worked fine. This was about 2 or 3 weeks ago, and now it won't start again , but i don't think it's the starter. The first time, when i turned the key, the starter would make ONE clicking noise. Now, when i turn the key, it makes a much louder clicking noise in rapid succesion. I swear, it sounds like a machine gun. Also, the battery can't hold charge for more than a couple days. I don't know if these prolems are related though, because even after hooking the battery up to a charger, it just makes that stupid gun noise.
PLEASE help me out guys.

Check your wiring.

Also, find out why your battery won't hold a charge.

alternator/starter combo. had the same thing happen to me. i dont know how they are linked but i was told it was common for both to go at once. i replaced my starter and alternator along with battery and not a prob since (over a year now). and i dont think it had anything to do with your relay, i used to tap on my starter and it would work for a few days w/o any tapping then randomly not work. good luck (btw these parts are 150+ for the starter and 200+ for alternator...start looking now) ...on the dash is the charging system indicator light on? mine was and that was the cure.
