Quick Question about clutch

I start my car this morning, already running late for work and i almost put the clutch pedal through the floor. There is no pressure on the pedal. I check the resevoir and it is full to the top. I assume its either the slave or master cylinder. I have had those go bad in the past, but there has always been a loss of fluid that went with them. at napa the master is about $90, and the slave about $40.

Which one would be the most likely to have gone out? and can they go bad with out losing fluid?or should i replace them both at the same time to be sure.

When i get out of work tonight, im going to try to bleed the lines to see if they may have gotten air in them somehow, but i doubt that is the cause.

You cant Rebuild them? The only thing that go's out on them are the O-Rings and its easy as hell to rebuild them and cheap! you can check your slave pop open the rubber boot on the slave and see if its full of fluid if it its then is your slave that went bad.

Yeah, i had thought about rebuilding, but i figured if a seal had gone bad it would have leaked fluid. I didnt have time to check the boot this morning, but i will when i get home tonight. I was thinking maybe the piston seized-if it did would a rebuild help? or would it be like putting a band aid on a gunshot wound?.

I had the same thing happen to me on my 91 coupe i had, that problem never returned after i removed that junction box. I think it was put there by Nissan to absorb the pedal vibrations from the clutch.

Why pay $90 for a Napa Master cyl? I have the factory Nissan ones for less then that ($80). The slave is about $35 for a Nissan one.

The only thing i dont like about Napa (and other parts store replacement parts) is that they use A) a generic part or B) they remanufacture a old part which you have no idea how many times it was probably reused. At least the Nissan ones are brand new and not rebuilt.

Nah if you rebuild it its like buying a brand new one unless the inside MS and Slave cylinder walls are rusted, if they are replace them if not replace the O-Rings. I rebuilt Both on my AE86 and never had a problem.

If your piston seized then your pedal wouldnt have gone to the floor

Thanks for the replies. I will try to rebuild them. The reason i checked out napa was i need the parts right away, as this is my daily driver. Paying more for the parts would be cheaper than missing a day of work.

That's true if the Master or slave is relatively new rebuilds, but can you imagine a master or slave that has been in reman rotation since 1990 or so? Im sure it gets to a point where the bore becomes out of whack or too large from 17 years of wear. lol

What should I be using for the clutch fluid 5w30 or 10w30?


j/k. I did not see any puddles, but i park on grass so i could have missed it. I only plan on having this car a few more months, so im trying to only fix things as they break and do it on the cheap, so i think ill try to rebuild first.

Well, on the way home from work i stopped at every auto parts store i could think of. not one store had the rebuild kit in stock. one store did have the master cylinder in stock though. so I go home figuring i would hit the junkyard tomm. as i cant wait for ordered parts.

So i get home and step on the pedal-no resistance. after a few minutes of trying differnt things, i get under the dash and press the pedal with my hand. there is no resistance in the begginning of the travel, but gets a bit firmer when its close to the floor. it was not firm enough notice with my foot.with the car off the car goes into all the gears fine, if i turn the car on it wont leave nuetral.


The car was fine when i parked it last night. If it is the clutch, how would a clutch go bad through sitting? the clutch never slipped and never made any noise.

THere's no puddles? its likely theres air in there but who knows how it got in. wierd. If you figure it out keep us posted.

Well if your pedal is going to the floor its probably your master. I would just get a new OEM one. I got mine from thepartsbin.com brand new and you can pay for overnight for like 20 bucks. Whatever you decide when you remove the master try not to let all the fluid out from the line other wise you get a tad bit of air and it is a bitch to bleed. I had to gravity bleed mine by pulling the master above the line.

Well, i rebuilt the slave yesterday and it did not fix the prob. so i ordered a master and just finished putting it in. There is a bit more clucth feel now-its still pretty soft, but it is not spongy and the car shifts, kind of- its HARD to get into first,the other gears seem fine. The clutch does not slip under hard accel, so i figure its ok.

The car moves though so i guess i can continue commuting to my crappy job haha
