Window Tint Question
Will ammonia get old ass tint off the rear window of an S14 with no problems, including the film stuck inbetween all the little dots that go around the border of the window?
Can old tint be removed safely without harming the defroster lines? |

I always used a good adhesive remover and spent a few hours scrubbing it with rags. There's not a lot else that will get it off. The tint though should peel away easily.

Well basically, to start off - I know nothing about tint. I know the tint on my 240 is old as hell though and it's purple and bubbling. I had a tint guy come out and look at it and he tried to get the tint off, but could not get the "gooey adhesive" off from the "dot matrix" area that runs around the back of the window. He said there's nothing that can be done and I will just have to tint it as is. I guess I'm just curious if that's normal and an accurate statement or if he's inexperienced/lazy and he's trying to rip me off.

The tint shop that removed my ugly old tint on my hatch used some steam machine. Get it really hot and steamy, and then peel it off. Took them like 6 hours for the hatch, lol.

not to thread jack but has anyone had problems with s14 power window bumpers scratching your tint. Mine has now put long vertical scratches in my tint.

easiest way: go to a local little league game and back in as close as possible on the third base line, than just pray for a foul ball and that you have comp coverage
this may help too though: http://www.tintcenter.com/articles/bt_removal.html

I used some window cleaner with amonia, trash bags and tape..... it came off like butter. use a bunch of cleaner on the window then tape the trash bag up on the glass and let it sit in the sun for a few hours. if its not hot enough, use a heat gun or blow dryer. i did this on my 300zx and i was amazed. it just peeled off in one piece. basicly it just fell off. remember to clean the shit out of it right afterwards or some of the adhesive may be bothersome.

senergy has it right.
I used some windex with amonia, sprayed the shit out of my back window, then cut a plastic trash bag to cover the window and after a couple of hours of being parked in the sun, the tint just slide right off in one piece. After that I used a bottle of goof off and an old tee shirt to clean off the rest of the adhesive. |
