Newb looking for more power on SR20DET
Im a newb, but not new to forums. Ive searched and haven't found what Im looking for. I can harass newbs with the best of em for asking dumb questions like Im about to ask, so please keep it to a minimum
![]() Im looking to get around 275rwhp - 300rwhp. I need to know the basics for getting more power out of my redtop. I have a basically stock sr20det with nice front mount intercooler and a Walbro 255 fuel pump. Thats about it. I want to know: 1. I know i need a better turbo for more power, so Im thinking GT2871R. 2. With a new turbo, how much power can I make until the stock injectors are maxed out? 3. I have a KA MAF, what should that be replaced with and at what power level is that necessary? 4. What is the "best"(read cheapest way that works good) thing to control the bigger injectors? 5. Do people have success with piggybacks on the sr20? Like an E-manage, SMT7, etc...? Any other comments to help me know what I need to get that kind of power. Thanks. Also, if there is already a badass writeup that already goes over all this, just please post the link. Thank you. |

2. the stock 370's are good for around 240~250whp, anything above that, and i'd upgrade to a set of 550's 3.the stock maf (sohc same as the sr) is maxed out between 250-270 so i wouldnt take it above that. 4. the best and most cost effective way to control the fuel system (IMO) is an enthalpy system. a good setup with a warrenty. 5.a piggypack system isnt too bad, just depends on the tuner. the safc's are ok, but def. not the best. and people are getting better results with the emanage ultimate than with the older version of the emanage. keep in mind, these are just my opinions....everyone here is going to have a different one. good luck with you're search. ![]() .

2)its kind of pointless to upgrade to a turbo of that size without upgrading injectors 3)you can go 2 ways, z32 MAF, or map sensor. 4) not to sure.. 5) no idea. hoped i could have helped. |

hay man
for starters I don't have a bigger turbo so I'll leave that alone next hmmm...injectors 550s are great unless you need something really out there for power or major boost, I don't think you'll exceed the 550s for a while. MAFs well I would go ahead and upgrade I got a q45 in my sr20 with 14psi the 300zs are good but there are about 3 different wirings for them the q45 only has 3 wires just like the sr maf does. I have the aem standalone and what I hope is a really good street tune and a drag tune, I know it's a little expensive but I wanted to make sure I didn't have to buy one thing then upgrade 2 or 3 times. I also have a apexi ASCF2 thats more for a guage for me, see maf readings and things without my laptop. |

For 300whp:
1. GT2871R comes in 2 trim levels (.64 and .86) and costs around $150-200 more than an s15 spec r turbo. The .64 trim has awesome response and is good for 350+whp. The .86 has more power higher up (400whp) and a little more lag (Spools up 400-500rpm later than the .64 trim) Either way you could run a 2871r with lower boost and leave some "room to grow" because speed is addictive haha. Running lower boost will also preserve the turbo. If you want more power, just turn up the boost! But if you wanna save a couple hundred bucks just get an s15 spec r turbo as posted earlier. 2. You'll need at least 550cc injectors. Deatschwerks is the cheapest place to go. If you get the gt2871r get some 740cc injectors (Or at least 650cc injectors) and run them at a lower duty cycle to leave yourself "room to grow," or stick with the 550's if you go with the s15 spec r turbo. 3. A z32 mafs will be necessary for over 240whp and is good up to 500whp. Any more power and you'll need to run a map sensor. 4. Speed costs money. You gotta pay to play. You could get a mail order enthalpy tune for $500 but it won't be spot on (Mail order rom tunes will never be spot on) so you'll need an safc for ~$200 to dial it in and pay another ~$100-$200 for dyno tuning. Total cost will be ~$900. OR Get enthalpy (Scott) to real time dyno tune your car (He's in florida so location might be an issue. Also don't know how much he charges) but Scott is a REALLY good tuner, OR Get a power fc. It's the least expensive standalone and is tried and true among tuners. In any case, real time professional dyno tuning is key. 5. Sorry, I don't know anyone who runs emanage. These are just general pointers from personal experience. Good luck and hope this helps! |
