Who rides a fixie?
Was bored and was looking through ziptied and stumbled on a fixie bashing/praising thread and though I would start one here. Once upon a time I was a Cat2 road racer and track racer on the San Diego Velodrome. I wont lie, back in high school I used to ride to school on the track bike weaving through traffic like a moron...but that was when I was dumb and fearless. Anyways, fast forward 5 years I am out of the army and trying to quit smoking. I put together my old backup bike for the track and have been commuting to work... Who here rides a fixie? Who rode one before they were the "cool thing" to do?

i havent been riding too long, rode my first fixie lil over a year ago. i hope im not one of these guys who started riding when it was only cool. anyways i really enjoy it and commute everyday to school here in richmond but i dont think i fit in with the crowd that rides fixies here. i ride an olive giant bowrey, orange deep-V's, race face bars with oury's and thats about it. a lot of people hate the bowrey but ive rode many and really like it. it is a rush in traffic everyday, but i think thats what separates fixies from the rest.
some old pic's will post some up with a real camera soon. ![]() ![]() |

Figured I'd see someone from Richmond post up, lol.
Need to finish getting the shit for mine, got an old ass 10 speed my roomie wrecked and bent shit, figured I'd get the shit to make it a fixie and try it out. None of those flat bars though, shits are ugly. Was gonna get deep V's, but don't think I will, everyone is rocking those these days.

fixed gear bikes are a pretty lame trend. i understand couriers in flat areas (NYC) riding them, but anywhere else makes zero sense.
.....that said i do have a singlespeed (still freewheel) made out of my old Specialized mountain bike. there's a perfectly flat trail a few miles from me that's great for it.

i haven't rode my road bike in a while. its an old school celeste bianchi. i sorta want a convert it to a fixie since around my area its all flat. completely flat. prolly when i get the time, ill do it since i know a couple heads that ride one around san diego. i'd just need to get a roof rack or take it apart each time i bring it down.

![]() as of now. the bike its self was a graduation gift and the rear deep v i got for my b-day so its like the hipsterness is being thrown on me lol. but the deep v's are nice, very tough and thats what im looking for. my older brother who also goes to VCU here has been riding for years. 240trainee- i dont go your way often but when i do i make sure i see your car, ive never seen it on the road tho. there are a couple s13's in the area commonly, who has the white vert near you? onabulletride-i like the knuckles, thinking about one for my next build. how much toe overlap do you have? someone i know is having a problem with that on a bareK. very clean DRiFTED DAILY! haha |

also to busted, it is definitely a fad, but riding a fixed gear is a very unique experience, and its a hell of a lot of fun, which is why i think so many people are addicted to riding them nowadays. |

i've been into fixed gear bikes for about a year. i recently picked up a 07 bianchi pista. i don't care about all that bashing on fixies.. as long as i'm happy. plus, it's an awesome workout. i feel so wasteful and lazy while driving a car.
let me know too! i'll down to ride anywhere. my friends and i travel to the Berkeley/San Francisco area every year to visit some college friends and ride around everywhere.

in cities where your drive isn't more than a few miles it makes sense. here in STL, unless you live IN the city they're pretty useless for transportation. i ride my bikes to the grocery store, but that's about it. i mostly just ride for exercise and fun... and using a bike to commute is a great idea if you like being sweaty and gross at work.

How the hell does it seem dumb. I know Los Angeles is nothing like New York, But I can get to places faster on the bike then in my cars. Plus I dont have to use gas.LOL I can ride for miles, $60 for tires every 2 months 5days a week sounds good to me Beats $45 every 5days. You do the math.

But, a fixed gear sounds like you're just asking for trouble, especially around here in western Washington. I wouldn't bother trying to negotiate most places in the Seattle area on a fixie. Give me a freewheel if i'm going to be dealing with any real elevation changes. |

I HATE FIXIES !!!!!
I HATE HIPSTER TRENDS!!!!! probably because I am from the hipster capital of the world, SEATTLE. I live in LA now and have been noticing more and more of them around. And last week at lunch, at the "101 cafe", my trend sucker friend told me he was thinking about getting one. ughh. Then he gives me a shirt that makes fun of hipsters, that he bought at a "boutique". and it even makes fun of fixies!!!! WTF, I must know some retartds! ![]() "Since the skating didn't work out, now you can look cool on a bike. its like the whole fixing up the car thing, your not a real racer, but you have a transformer wing on your Honda" |

No disrespect to anyone, I'm just stating my opinion--->Fixed-geared road bikes and the general hipsters that ride then really aggravate me. Up here in Oregon there was this massive surge of tight-jeaned, sweater-wearing, block-spectacle asshats riding around like they are better than everyone else. I just can't stand it. Though I ride an S&M BMX so I can't really talk about being cool on a bike... |
