oil cooler - whare is best to put it, and size ?

Hi.

I am building myself an Oil cooler kit.
I already have a Tomei N2 Block, and a greddy Filter block with thermostat...
I need to get some lines, so i need to decide on the cooler size, and location.

I was thinking about a SETRAB cooler, and about mounting it instead of the washer bottle, under the battery tray, inside the wing.
That would be a good location for air flow, as putting it between the intercooler, and the rad , doesnt sound good to me.

From my meassures, SETRAB #125 or #625, would fit perfectly.

I am just not sure if the size is good.
I dont want to go too big, but not to small either.

The car will be about 400HP-500HP,when finished (with the right tuning, and a bit of luck).
It will be used for ocational DRAG/DRIFT/COURSE and ocationaly driving around town.

i was wondering what do you think, and if someone has done this
Where did you mounted it and what did you go for ?

In my car i used a B&M #70273 (15,000 BTU 11"x5-3/4"x1-1/2") 1/2npt which i plumbed into a -10AN adapter.

I was planning on putting it up where your thinking, but for an easier install i just put it between my intercooler and radiator.
Although i do live in NY, so it's not really hot up here. (my engine temps top at a nice steady 185* F) If you live somewhere warm you may have airflow/heat issues with that.

I have an S14 I took out the front grill and I will put my oil cooler there. I dont think it really matters as long as it has air flow going across it.

I think a cooler that fits instead of the front grill, would be a bit too small, no ?

Allso, as i have a FMIC, and the A/C rad, infront of the Coolant Rad, i wouldnt want to jam another heat source in front of it..... I does tend to get pretty hot around where i live.

Drifting in the desert, would surley rise the temp , dont you think ?

waiting on the rest of my fittings to get here.. but the way the lines wil be ran are from the block adapter to the bulkheads going through the radiator support and then 90 over to the cooler. Hope it helps.

n2 block, greddy oil filter block, and setrab cooler is what I'm planning to do. putting the cooler in the grill area is a nice design. ARC uses it, but their coolers are efficient.

here is a pic of the $1000 ARC oil cooler for s13 silvia. its nice but i think ARC discontinued it.



i've also seen people put it on the driver or passenger side of the bumper. RX7 FDs are set up like that stock from the factory with dual oil coolers.

That ARC cooler - 6 row's for 1000$, is a rip off. Meaby they dscontinued it because of there conscience finaly getting to them.

More rows = more cooling , BTW.

For a high power car, only 6 rows sounds to small for me.

well yea, most ARC products are bank and might not justify their cost. (their intercoolers range from 1500 and up)

i was trying to show you a picture as an example of how a grilled mounted setup would work if you decided to go that route, as the some other guy explained that he put his oil cooler in the grill area of his s14.

well, since your oil cooler is the traditional size, you might just put it on the side or in front of the radiator like the other guy posted pictures of.

this is a picture of an rx7 with upgraded dual oil coolers


if you want to be creative, you can even make ducting for them like this rx7 with vmount setup and dual oil coolers

Mine is mounted in front of the radiator behind the intercooler, where the ac condenser would be. I havent had any issues with cooling, car has yet to overheat, having the fans behind the radiator helps the cooling. Only thing I plan on doing is ducting to help direct flow.

Also my intercooler is a tank and my oil cooler wouldnt break if i was in a crash like it would if i had it under the battery tray..

brand and if you relocated your oil filter as well? lines and fittings are no issue.

all ARC products are still 100% hand made. that takes skill and patients, which brings up the price! it's much higher quality than any little ebay/xo2 racing oil cooler, or intercooler.

of course i relocted the filter
stock filter location sucks
lines and fittings are never an issue
its very straight forward. part of basic mechanics


here's what u do

buy parts
fit them
then figure what lines and fittings you need. its very very very very vyer easy.

hardest part is making stuff sit and mount right and be in a good spot
drilll holes if needs be.

That is a lot of money just for that. I got this for $27x,


but I'm not happy with it. Just you your own setup the way you want it to be, I'm sure at the end you'll be much happier. I'm sure as hell not happy with what I've got, so I'm not installing it.

Circuit Sports as well as Powered by Max have a oil cooler, but the thing is, everyone won't want the oil cooler located at the same place.

When you build your own setup, it will fit exactly how you wish.

Setrab has been a longtime choice for oil coolers.

Don't be afraid to bust out the tape measure.

looks like you got about the same as the cs kit for about the same price. ($27x vs 290) the cs kit says it includes an oil block adaptor, which looks like it isn't pictured. it probably has another hose too.

why aren't you happy with your setup? i rather go custom as well. get the parts you want and the correct lengths of hoses where you want to put your oil cooler.

It says block adapter and filter relocator, but the pic shows a sandwich adapter...

Taka has a kit with the block adapter, filter relocator, cooler, and lines for $450.

yea looking at it again, it does look like just a sandwich adaptor. but the description says filter relocator and block adaptor. weird. maybe ask phase2 if you are seriously considering this kit.

the taka kit looks like almost everything one should need. comes with high quality parts such as setrab cooler, earls lines, and necessary adaptors. i would get it for as an easy bolt on application which is tried and works.

i rather go custom, i dont know where i'll place my oil cooler yet.

Whenever I do my oil cooler/relocation kit
1. Tomei block adapter, or mod the OEM oil filter mounting block. Or better yet, tap the block for the fittings while its at the machine shop for the honing.
2. GREX thermostatic oil filter block.
3. Of course the braided hoses to the correct length.
4. Setrab oil cooler.
