As far as I know, in order to have the car registered (?) It must pass a smog. Doesnt matter how you get it.

It does have to pass smog, but only by 49-state standards (not as strict).

So what's required under 49 state standard for smog? According to the CA DMV, I'm in the military so my car would go by the 49 state standard. This could be good news if I decide to get out the military and move back to CA.

As of now, I'm getting my info from TechN9ne, who has a "Smog questions" thread on here... I asked the same question because my g/f has a GA-model Sentra that she needs to get smogged soon. Let me get the link.

If it's a family member, see if they will leave it registered in their name so you don't have to smog it in Cali. Problem solved!
