The manual said to use GL-4 transmission oil for my Manual Transmission.
How harmful would using GL-5 oil be? Would it even be harmful at all? |

Doubt it. Just make sure it's the same weight. (75-90 etc.) Get a good quality oil and don't worry about it. Valvoline, or Mobil 1 Synthetic, I'd choose for the tranny.

The general rule is that GL-5 gear oil should NOT be used unless your owner's manual specifically recommends it. This is because some of the additives used in GL-5 gear oil will attack brass, bronze, copper used in gearbox bearings and bushings. Some additives will also attack the rubber and plastic in the bearing seals.
I know some 240SX owners have used GL-5 oil in their manual tranny without any problems but I would still caution against it. |
