Used VS Rebuilt Transmitions

The syncros on my transmission are shot and I need a new transmition so what should I do? A rebuilt transmition will cost me 1400 plus installation I don't want to spend that much but I don't know how reliable a used Transmission is.

I have a used tranny from my old 95. It'll suit your needs fine. I'm in falls church.

If not a tranny from a junkyard is a heck of a lot better than 1400 bux to get one rebuilt.

I found a used transmition for 200 shiped to the shop. ACT clutch should cost 300 and Installation 350 total comes to 850 I like this number better

Mine gave up at 130,000 miles so the question is how long does the 240's transmission last?

It all depends on driving style. If you change the fluid regularaly, shift well, don't miss gears, always use the clutch, and properly match revs, a tranny should last a long time. There is no "lifespan" per se for a KA tranny. I'm sure there are some out there with over 200k...but then others that can blow up a rebuilt one the first weekend at the track.

Just nab Jed's for $100, and take it apart yourself. It's all spelled out in the FSM. Then just get new synchros and if the gears are worn, get those too. Put it all back together and pop it in the car. Then take the old one out, rebuild it too, and sell it for a profit. You'll probably get a new tranny for $free.99.

Damn guys. Transmissions are about the easiest thing to rebuild. Open it up, and then read your FSM. It'll take a couple hours to swap everything, and then put it back in your car. It's also very cheap. I dunno what gears cost, but in my old tranny, synchros were $6 and gears were like $40.

Is it really THAT easy to rebuild a tranny with an fsm? Mine's on it's way out, if I could start the rebuild myself now it'd only be down for a day incase my current one ****s itself. iirc, gears for the 240sx tranny are $80-100 each, syncros are like 20 but it's been a while since I looked.

Yea. It is that easy. My friend owns a shop, and only charges like $100 plus parts, so it could only take him 2 hours to rebuild one. It took me like 4 or 5 hours, but still...
Also.. I have an auto, so I didn't check on gear prices, but those I listed were for my old chevy tranny.
Finally... if you are driving hard, I would recommend cryo-treating the gears in the tranny before you install them. It'll make them rock-hard and increase durability and life.

I just replaced my tranny last month it had 93000 on it, my torque converter went out. It cost me 1100 for everything to get it rebuilt, because it threw peices all over which plugged the filter and burned up everthing in it. But it was done by a family friend that works at a transmission shop.

Yea. Automatic transmissions are terribly expensive to rebuild. So many valves and electronics.. plus the torque convertor is expensive in itself. That's why I'm swapping to a manual... so when I blow my tranny, I can rebuild it.

Take good care of your tranny(change fluid) and know how to shift correctly and it will last forever.

my tranny has been bad since I bought the car 1 1/2 years ago...i've only made it worse learning how to drive on it and shifting like an ass. I've learned my lesson
