I have a mtx 12" sub, powered by a 300 watt amp, and was wondering the correct enclosure for this setup. I have a s-13 hatchback and I listen to heavy metal/ alternative which really drives my sub to its limit. Thanx .

You want a sealed box for the best frequency response.

check out the spec sheet on your sub, it should specify the dimensions of airspace required.

PS - what type of amp is it? "300 watt" doesn't mean a god damned thing!!! I'll build you a 1000 watt amp for $30.00

(Unless you have a computer assisted design system and a degree in acoustics - hence the impressive frequency response of the alumapro BP-series bandpass subwoofer enclosures)

The amp I have is just a cheap one with a built in crossover to drive the sub. Also I dont have the spec. sheet on the sub. Just looking for a ballpark figure on cubes needed. I guess a ported box is out of the question?

Ported boxes generally only respond at a single (or very narrow) frequency range and thus would not be good for rock/alternative type music. It would be okay for rap (depending on your taste)

Look up the specs on the sub online.

id be certain to say that mtx makes a box for your sub, check emay or check for q logic boxes too, or crutchfield.com

you must be thinking of bandpass because ported enclosures are great for rock.

i have a ported and sealed enclosure i'm listening to right now. sealed enclosures do sound better than ported, i'll agree with you there.

I'm pretty sure that ported enclosures have a boomier sound and are better for certain frequencies, but they still have a good overall range. They just lack the control/sound quality of a sealed enclosure. But, with a sealed enclosure you can get that tighter OR boomier sound by changing the internal volume of the box. I remember reading some more exact numbers somewhere but I can't recall them right now. The bandpass does have a limited range that it really thumps in. Other then that range it isn't very good. My brother has an Alpine 10" Type S Bandpass that he got for Christmas, and it thumps pretty good but you can tell it is a bandpass. Although for most of the music he plays, the bass hits are in that frequency.

On another note. What made you decide to get MTX subs?

Heh I hope it was a free sub. But definatly go with a sealed enclosure it will give you the best quality for the music you listen too. You dont want really loose bass when playing heavy metal with a drum beat. Subs realy arent that importent in that type of music too as their real potential isnt shown as it is with a steady bass beat like rap offers. Although rap music sucks IMHO. I am running 2 12" Rockford Fosgate HE2's in a sealed 1.25cft box sounds pretty good cept for that annoying hatch rattle I need dynamat

People have been arguing wich type of enclosure is better (sealed, ported, bandpass) for as long as I can remember. To say a sealed enclosure has punchier better sounding bass is way too general and BS. All 3 types of enclosures can sound good as long as it's designed correctly. Some subs sound better in a sealed enclosure and some sound better in a ported...... and then you add in vehicle dynamics and everything changes. If you'd like to get into a in depth discussion, go over to the carsound.com forums and discuss it with the pros. So to answer the question to the original post, the only way to decide on an enclosure design is to get the T/S parameters and input them in a design program like WinISD and it will recommend a ported or sealed enclosure. Or if you have the subwoofer model number, post it here and I will post my findings. That's all I have to say about that....

well, it all depends. do you like ****ty sound with a lot of frequencies missing, but the ones that are there are extremely LOUD? then get a bandpass. if you prefer accurate, full bass, and don't mind that you aren't getting as much trunk rattle for your buck, get a sealed. single sealed boxes by R/T can be had from Best Buy for like 50 bucks... i've got an R/T dual, holstering a pair of Diamond CM3's, powered by a Kenwood 1000watt... sounds great, but the kenwood's kind of sucky and overrated. runs 460max at 4 ohms.

What kind of MTX subs do you have? If they are Thunder 4000, then no matter what you put them in they aren't going to sound great. Thunder 6000 sound real good, and the 8000 sound great in a sealed box.

I got the speaker and a small sealed box for a toyota pickup. Yes for free. I have it in the back of my car now but it is not running efficiently. I think it is because of the little box. All I can tell you about the speaker is that its a black gold mtx, and the only #'s are 3cf323. I cant find anything else on it.

Try stuffing the box with poly-fill for something of that nature. Also with sealed enclosures you can usually run the sub with more power too it than what is the recommended RMS.

Oh. And I've never listened to a Black Gold MTX. I've heard that they were better than other ones. I just don't like the ones they have advertised in Crutchfield. That line-up. But I haven't heard the RFL either. Just all the others.
