how easy to ruin cams?

this morning i finally grew tired of my parents nagging and decided to clean out my shed. in it i found most of my old eclipse 4g63 motor. a buddy of mine wants the cams but that have a slight coating of rust on them, just enough to discolor them. we were thinking about taking a wire brushed buffing wheel to them to clean them up.

im just wondering if i was to take a max of .001-.003 of the cams would that ruin them? i used to mork for a P&w shop so im well versed in the buffing, but would he just have to reshim? or should i just throw them on the side of the road with the rest of the stuff?

thanks, matt

It depends on the tolerances of that motor. 1-3 thousandths of an inch isn't much at all, and as long as your buddy knows about that, it wont be a problem.
Also.. mabey do it by hand, rather than a 5k rpm wheel. You'll do less damage.
