Does anybody know if the fuel tank is directly underneath the rear seat belt holes (middle two, not the seat belt buckles, but the bolts that secure that seat belt strap to the chassis - closest to the fuel pump). I removed the rear seat belts, reinstalled the bolts, but heard a crack. Couldnt really see down the threaded bolt holes on the chassis to see if the plastic fuel tank was right below. Now after that im getting horrible gas mileage. Just want to make sure I didnt crack the tank. Also when I go to remove my gas cap, I it doesnt seem pressurized. It'd probably help to mention which chassis your working on.
FWIW, on an S13 the seat belts aren't located anywhere near the fuel tank. Good Luck! |

S14's have plastic gas tanks which are located under the rear seats iirc.
If this is happening after you put the bolts back on, I'm guessing the extra threads pushed up against it and possibly cracked it? Probably should have stacked a washer or two on there. |

I don't know what car you're talking about but I believe that the S13 fuel tank straps are not in that area.
Get your gas cap pressure tested. The gas cap should be tight, but the tank should not be pressure tight. The vent line should go to the evap charcoal canister or open to atmosphere. |

Mostlikely its cracked,if you get gas and open the cap it should be pressurized and let pressure out and be noticeably loud .Look under the car and see if you can see raw gas on the tank or smell it?Next if your still not sure id take out the back seat and remove the bolt you heard the cracking noise with and see if theres gas on the bolt or smell in the hole. And if your still not 100% sure drop the tank seeing how it gonna need to get fixed and or replaced any way.

Its an s14.....CRAP.
However looking at the FSM, there should be a fuel tank protector, however I dont know if its on the top, or bottom of the tank. I really cant see/tell if the tank is flush with the chassis. |

I love when people randomly guess dumb shit for the hell of it.
To the ones who quickly jumped on the OP's suggestion, you're morons. The tank sits a good three inches below the chassis floorpan in most places. Even at it's closest it's maybe an inch away. There is no possible way the bolts contacted anything unless you welded another 60-80mm to them first. The noise you heard is the layer of undercoating applied on the floorpan that sits flush against the bolt end, you've just pushed it out a bit by threading the bolt back in. There's nothing to worry about.
