Rim offset.....wha???

First I would like to state that, yes, I know this is an extremely noob question, but i'm having a hard time figuring this out.

Ok I know what the different sizes of rims and tires mean...(ie. 17x7.5 & 215/45/17) ...but what is rim offset?? And how is that a factor in deciding what tire to mount? ...any shared knowledge would be greatly appriciated.

actual depends on your preference
if you use negative camber then you can go like 7.5 with a 0 or negative offset.

most would say around a 25 or so on a 7.5 is pretty good. you should clear coilovers depending on your tire choice (if you use a brand that has a lot of 'tire protection'-like dunlops and use a wiiide tire you'll hit the coilvoers). on a 7.5 i would say use a 215 or a 205. i use a 205. slight stretch great feel.

offset is mostly preference. but when you throw in stuff like z brakes and coilovers it gets tricky!
