Well, my buddy has a 95 240sx, and we both noticed that when he brakes hard, the rear gives a clunk sounds and shakes a little.

Any idea of what this is?
Has anyone experienced this?

I'm thinking it could be the brakes, maybe they don't have shims, or it might be the diff'.

Any input would be helpful
thanks

It could be the shims, but I think there purpose is to cut down on vibration. Check the retainer clips, there pieces of thin metel that hold the pads in place. Hope I helped.

Sorry, yeah check the shims too. I must have missed the "vibration" part of the post. It's possible that some knuckle-head did a break job and forgot to put the retainers AND shims back in.

yeah, thats what we are thinking. but weren't sure.
I guess when we up-grade the rotors, and brakelines.......well find out.

I was just wondering if thats the affects of not having the shims and retainer clip put in right.
I
Thanks Gold240sx

Is there anything else it could be?

maybe like subframe bushing?

His car doesn't have ABS, so, I'll have to rule that out.

He's thinking about insalling ABS.....

He's got LSD and no ABS? I don't think I've ever heard of such a combo. The case is that I got a chance to ride in a '98 240 with 318rwhp, auto the other day. The gentleman who was driving it showed me well... everything. Accelleration, doing 180s in every turn he took and then finally stopping distance. It was barely anything from 50mph. I was amazed. I asked what the grinding/pulsating/clunking noise and feel were and he said it was his ABS and the 300ZX front brake upgrade. I asked no more.

S13grl.....hmmm.....he doesn't have an LSD. I don't see where you got that from......ahhhh...maybe you got confused with the other thread!?

But anyways, it can't be ABS or LSD, because he doesn't have those items.

I'm pretty sure thats what happens with no shims or retainers. The fronts might not do it cuz they might have shims and retainers.

P.S. you did say it might be the diff. hence if he doesn't have one it would not be the problem. Any way, check out the shims and retainers and if he does't have any my guess would be the best place to find them would be the dealer.

its auto right?
when you brake hard in auto the car shakes because f the trans shift into neutral and then brake the shaking should go away. if its the abs you will know its a unique feeling/sound especialy through the pedal

I know at least a couple of us have a clunk in the rear... Mark

I'd agree to check the brakes if it is only under braking.

There are two other culprits in the s14: 1) Rear subframe bushings will cause a clunk in the lower gears when you get out of the throttle. It is caused by the weight shifting forward and the bushings being worn out. This won't happen at high speeds, however, and only occurs at the time of initial weight shift. 2) Differential bushings can go bad - even when you don't have LSD. This is a similar clunk, but is apparently quieter and more driveline centered. I haven't heard as much about this one b/c I don't have it. Both are EXPENSIVE to fix.

BTW, S13grl - if you don't stop talking about this guy, I'm telling your bf that you went for a ride with a boy with a bigger... uhh motor... and that you liked the way he controlled it

Gold240se- Thanks for that little there info

gh606-nope, its manual.

Hipposleek- When we repalce that brake..........and if it still making the clunk, then we'll looking into the subframe bushing and diff' bushing.

S13grl- HUH!? Don't get it...........

Does the clunk do anything other than make noise? My truck makes so many stupid noises and shakes, I figured out a quick cure-all. Turn up the stereo!

Do you have ABS? My 96 pickup has it, and sometimes when I break hard, I get a oscillating clunk in the rear end. Most of the time, it's when the rear wheels lose significant traction, due to my bed being so light. A good test is to find a hill you can climb with loose dirt, and go up it. We're talking steep. Get near the top and let it roll backwards and put on the brakes. It should do a couple of clunks. Are you on paved road when this is happening? How fast are you braking? 60-0? I would think it's normal if it is really hard breaking, although maybe your sensors are messed up. Or maybe your front wheels aren't braking enough and the rear has to take up the slack? Just some ideas.

Other than that, jack up the rear end and start poking around. My truck is now pulling to the left, and I'm going to bleed the brakes this weekend. I'm hoping that fixes it. If not, I'm just going to starting poking things.

No ABS DooD.......... its not that clunk you get when rolling back then pressing on the brakes.

BTW, the car belongs to a buddy of mine, we are just trying to troubleshoot the problem.

We should be jacking it up and toying with it in a couple of weeks or so.........
thanks

Cool beans. I should add I did get an alignment, and checked the tire pressure, so as not to make people think I'm a moron.
