Head Gasket?

I was cleaning my engine the other day and saw that where the head meeets the block there is a string/rubber like material that hangs down in many places. This means I need a new head gasket? also in my spark plug holes it is black almost to the top, does this have anything to do with the head gasket, if not any ideas waht it could be? How often does needing a new head gasket happen? Should i replace it soon? thanks alot

Did you feel any performance loss? If your head gasket is blow, you would lose compression on at least one piston.

As for the sparkplug, change it and look if it gets dark to the top again. You might be running extra rich.

replacing the headgasket is a long arduous process. before you start doing that... where exactly on the block was the string stuff hanging?? front timing chain cover?? below the exhaust manifold??

as for the spark plug holes.... seems like there might be a valve cover leak, or your spark plugs aren't seating correctly. clean out the spark plug holes with carb cleaner or brake cleaner, and blow out all debris before removing the plugs, then blow out all debris before installing plugs. this is very important!! debris on the plug seat or threads could lead to damage! if you don't have an air compressor, you could always use a can of compressed air, or remove the plugs and unplug the injectors and crank the engine to blow everything out.
