Transmission/Synchros

OK, So I got my car back together after the winter sleep and upgrades. One of the few upgrades that got done was an OBX short shifter. So anyways its been a week since I brought the car out from its nap, and then last night the tranny wouldn't let me shift into reverse, but then later last night it did and then today it wouldn't let me and then it would, hit and miss. The other thing is that I was in 5th and went to down shift to turn off the road I was on and it wouldn't let me put it in any gear other then 5th.
Then when I drained a little tranny oil out tonight, it was full of brass shavings and was a very dark green/brown with a gold metallic flake (my synchros).
So is my tranny blown? and what should I do?

TIA

I would start by draining and filling your tranny with new fluid. See if that helps... if not, go from there. Good luck!

Shavings are perfectly normal to see, and the fluid will be pretty awful. You should change tranny fluid about every 15,000mi, so if you haven't done it...do it!
Not being able to get into reverse is somewhat normal, IIRC there is a lock on 1st and reverse to prevent accidential shifting. You should be able to go into neutral, let off the clutch, clutch in and then go into reverse. I dono what your doing, but you should never be moving when shifting into reverse either, for the sake of your tranny, come to a complete stop.

As for not being able to get into any other gears I dono, if double clutching doesn't help, then it prolly won't be your syncros...

OK, tranny is sitting next to my car now, and yeah I did change my fluid less then a year ago, with some fairly nice Mobil 1 oil (for trannies)

So, yeah I think I am gonna take the tranny into a shop and ask them whats wrong with it. I needed to replace my throw-out bearing anyways.

Any other ideas?

thank you

The other thing is that when it would only go into 5th I could take it out of 5th and into N but only N right below 5th, if that makes any sense. I couldnt move the shifter side to side, only front to back into 5th or into N right below 5th.

As for it not going into R I know that sometimes you have to let the clucth out a touch to get it to slip in, and yes I know about the lockout, it was hitting the lockout, and no matter what I did I couldnt get around it, shifted into every gear and then tried R, nothing, shift into 4th then to R, nothing etc.... so I dont know what is wrong.

sort of sounds like some kind of binding with the shifter linkage..

The wave washer (spring) could be messed up down where the fulcrum ball sits in the tranny case. You'll have to take apart some things to check that...

Your shift fork could be bent/binding/ready to break. Not sure. I would get this checked out professionally. Also, if the clutch is not fully disengaging (like if your slave cylinder is bad), all sorts of weird shifting problems can occur.

Thumbs up

not that this is necessarily the case, but keep in mind that the use of a short shifter will tend to increase wear on synchros...

My car does the not going into reverse deal sometimes. If shifting to another gear and back doesn't work for me, i let the car roll a little then it'll go in. If im on flat i'd go to 1st and move forward, then reverse...

Broken shift fork. To it to a shop and they said my input shaft bearing went out and that took out the rest of the bearings, and then that caused the more stuff to go bad and then I broke a shift fork, so yeah the tranny was DOA when I took it to the shop.

What causes a input shaft bearing to go bad?

Anyone have a S14 KA tranny cheap?
