Trying to remove rust on underbody *pic included*
I noticed I have quite a bit of rust forming on one particular area underneath my car. The under coating has chipped away and what is left is rust. For now i think this is just surface rust.
Before I check out local shops, I wanted to know if there is a DIY solution I can try first. I was thinking about renting a power sander (or wire wheel), start to sand this off and spray some primer on it. Here is a pic of what it looks like: ![]()

my S14 rusted up in the same place. i sandblasted the rust away and painted over the bare metal with POR15. Its the best stuff out there, kind of expensive but better than rust bullet.

That looks like rott to me, not just surface rust. Poke at it with a screw driver.
Pull up your carpet, cut out rust, weld in new metal.

Yea, I bet you could screwdriver right through that part. Naval jelly would leave you with tons of pinholes I bet after it reduced all the rust.

your really need to cut it out, either fab a piece to go back in, or cut the floor from a good one at the junk yard, it just depends on how serious you are about fixing it, if your not really concerned and just want to prevent it from spreading then strip the area in question down to bare metal, including a 2 inch area past the affected rust area, then por15 the hell out of it.

Doesnt por15 need a properly prepped surface to work? ive heard rusty surfaces are ineffective for por15. POR stands for paint over rust, but my research has wound up concluding that the metal needs to be clean and prepped for the por15 to actually be effective.
