![]() I've been trying to decide for a while whether I should keep the A/C system in my car when I swap the CA18DET in or whether I should save the extra weight and give myself some extra room for the big FMIC i'd like to throw on there. It gets hot here, but I really hate to use A/C anyway, so I'm kindof leaning towards getting rid of it.
Also, if I go the route of removing it, what do I have to do to safely dispose of the freon? Do I need to bring the entire assembly to a recycling station or something?

Well I got the whole front clip, so I shoudl be able to use all parts from the CA if needbe. That would help answer the question though, lol.

The A/C is broken in my S13, so I've never used it in this car. It gets HOT here... upper 90's, humidity so bad you can cut it with a knife. I'm like you, I'll do what I can to not use A/C.
The only time it really bothers me is getting stuck in traffic jams in summer. I say just bring a bottle of cold water with you on hot days. The easiest way to safely dispose of the freon would be to just take it to any mechanic that has the A/C charging/discharging equipment and have them discharge it. It shouldn't cost much, it only takes a minute or so. |

A/C is good for: Dates, Job interviews, or anything else you go to where you can't wear jeans and a t-shirt and can't go in all sweaty. Even with the windows down, you still get hot as hell, your back especially.
A/C is bad for: racing, speed, space, and gas. *shrugs* I LOVE A/C, even though I don't use it much, it is a VERY nice thing to have.

Well the clip, you still need to get the system charged with r12, which would be $$. No a/c would probably be the way to go.
EDIT: just read your loaction is maine, so yeah save yourself the hassel and weight. |

nah. if the system is completely empty (as it would be when it's dismantled) it can be refilled with R134a if you change a couple hoses, get rid of the old mineral oil in the system, and get a new reciever/dryer.

Well, the major thing is, I've only used the AC in my car about 5 times since i've owned it. Only on unbearable days. I just don't like the thought of not having it either... In the end though, I suppose it would be better to save myself the weight and room and just get rid of it.
Btw, just cuz I live in maine doesn't mean it never gets hot ![]()

Well, it hit 100 for about a week or two last summer, but that was the hottest. Humidity is absolutely horrible tho.

Sacrifices... Sacrifices... it's what it's all about... I mean my friend has an EK hybrid w/o AC, and he seems to get really annoyed when it gets hot. Especially when it's really really hot, and you have black interior and your car has been sitting outside for hours. It sucks, but if I were you, I'd keep the A/C. It's great to have A/C during the summer and have your windows rolled staying cool without having to smell other cars' exhaust... or even trucks' exhaust.... I'd say keep it.

I say lose it. I hate AC, although with a baby on the way I don't know if I should pull mine out just yet
![]() When I took the engine out of my 89 SOHC I called a friend with a Freon hose that hooks up to all kinds of cars and allows you to xfer it to one car to the other, so everyone benefits. You get rid of your Freon and they get theirs recharged. I bet Pep Boys or Checkers sells them, just ask any local parts store. |

I changed my old 90 KA24E S13 over to R134a with minimal problems.. just bled of the other system.. and refilled with the r134a with the new adapter. you can get the kits at any parts store.
The air wasn't as cold, unless you were cruising on the freeway were the RPMs were up a bit. And I had to get the pressure just right in the system to keep the compressor from kicking on and off all the time.

I removed mine for one purpose. To simplify things under the hood. I didn't gut it for weight reduction, or anything else. As of right now, Im not sure what motor will be going in, and since the evaporator core was already disfunctional...I decided to remove a headache.

ok, I guess it's going. Simplification is one major factor, and having that extra room for an intercooler will be very nice

here's a question:
if you remove your a/c, does that render the heater useless? i can live without a/c, but not the heater (the weather in virginia beach gets fickle), and that alone is what will make/break my decision on chucking all of my a/c related stuff. anyone?

i say ditch the ac, isnt that why they made windows?? and if you get suck in a traffic jam, bring somethin to drink. I dont know if it affects the heater? but i dont think it would unless you take out the entire a/c system. my friend took out just the cooling unit and left the fan and everything else, and the heater and fan still work. granted the air was whatever temp the car was on the inside and never cooled down. so far everything is working still.

Yeah, if you get rid of the AC, I can't see any reason at all why the heater wouldn't work. It should be totally seperate.
