question about car audio (it seems like something is not right, please help)

The problem is: The sub doesn't hit hard nor loud at all. It's pretty damn low and not what I expected at all. If it goes somewhat loud(which is not much, can barely hear it with the front speakers on) then it gets muffled.

I just bought (1) 1200 watt sony xplod sub
its 4ohms, 350rms

I have a 1200 watt sony xplod amp
stable at 4ohms, and gives 300rms

I believe I had 10 guage power/ground wires, but I just upgraded to 4 guage(rated for 500watts rms) and nothing changed.

Nothing is wrong with the amp, its perfectly fine, I had it running on 2 8" Rockford fosgates and they sounded perfectly fine. Speaker has to be good, I just bought it. What other factors could it be? ? ?

Thanks in advance for any ideas, I'll really apreciate it cause I am totally stumped.

P.S. I have a sony Xplod 50w by 4 headunit. I also don't have any underdrive pulleysand the electrical system is working fine.

Polarity might be off. Try switching the positive and negative wires connected to the sub and amp.

I second the polarity. If that doesn't solve it, you may want to grab a multimeter and check the voltage at your battery. Or, if your cheap, turn on the headlights and see if they are dim.

If it's a dual voicecoil sub then check to see if both the positives ARE positives and the negatives ARE negatives. Also, make sure your ground for you amp is GOOD. The point where your ground is scratch off the paint so it touches bare metal. I would recommend putting something to cover this (paint, silicon, etc.) so it won't rust or anything. Also make sure that there are no shorts. Sometimes if you don't have the wires to the amp connected good then little strands of copper wire with touch causeing a short.

check if the LPF (low pass filter) is on on the amp or the sub control is turned up on the deck. and chek that your balance is set up rite. or the level on the amp is turned up also the low boost.

Heh, this is what happens when you go from Fosgate to Sony. Although Sony subs are usually loud and shitty, not too quiet.

thanks guys, its works fine now. It is really loud, but not ****ty at all. ****tiness also has to do with making sure the box is the correct size, and that the crossovers and stuff are set up properly. I have always loved Sony products... from their gaming systems and home audio systems to their car audio and big screen tvs. Their products always worked fine, never broke down and kicks major ***. I am always amazed when I hear people say that Sony sucks.

As someone who has sold Sony and their competitors for years, let me tell you that there's nothing to be amazed about. Talk to anyone in the business and you'll see. I mean no offense to you personally, but it boggles my mind as to why anyone would spend money on Sony products when there are other brands that are better and cheaper. Once again, no offense to you personally and I hope your system sounds awesome for years to come

i second that!!
i own a car stereo shop, and there are definately way better
products out there. just gotta research.
i think of SONY as the APC of the car stereo world.
big name, easy to get, and everyone has it.
there is life beyond BEST BUY!
