![]() I have a '92 coupe, red, and my paint is fading. I don't know if there is anything that I can do about it but this is the second 240sx I've had and it is annoying the crap out of me. The paint seems to fade in some areas giving way to an ugly white. I don't know if polish would work or what.
![]() Thanks.

Red is the Worst.
Rubbing compound may leave some swirl that are not going to be removable. I would simply wax the crap out of it by hand. Wax on, Wax off (LOL) If you get it looking really tight, then take dishwashing detergent and remove all of the wax...I mean every bit of it...overkill, like 10 washes. Then go to the body shop and have it clearcoated. I know a guy that did this and his paint is holding up really well now...but ultimately, to have your car sanded down, repainted properly, about a 700 dollar job and your problems will be solved. You will find that a good grade of wax will remove so much of the dead red paint that you will need many applicators to do this. I would get 3 rolls of the blue shop towels (paper) and prepare for some sore arms. A buffer would be much better but the applicators are not cheap and you would go through a bunch of them....AND, an inexperienced person behind a power buffer can do much more harm than good. I feel for you but wax the stuffings out of it and see what you have. The reason to wash with dishwashing detergent after you get it right IF you are going to have it clear coated is that no paint will stick to wax...clearcoat will not stick...it will bubble up and orange peel galore. If you really love your car, get a car cover for the times it is sitting in the sun. |

Buffing and polishing only works if there is still paint there to work with. Ususally when it gets white (as I've seen) there isn't really any paint left. If it's just one panel I'd head for a junk yard and get one in better condition, otherwise prep it to be painted. If you remove the panel and do the prep work yourself, just dropping off the panel to be sprayed is not terribly expensive.
If the paint is good and just faded, I would suggest a good wash (with a nice wash mitt, not just a power spray to actually pick up the grit off the paint) then clay bar it, follwed by hand polish, and a good carnuba wax. After seeing how much grit comes up on what I thought was a clean car, I would avoid going straight to a polish after washing the car as the grit in your paint is likely to be far more abrasive than the particles in a fine hand polish.

Ja SD!
Gives them a chance to sit, take a drag off the cig or swig of brewski and think about that paragraph, then move on to the next. Kinda like small chapters of a dirty novel! Don't think I am not having a few cigs or beers...LOL Ck this out though.... It irritates the crap out of me to go up to someone and ask a question, and their immediate response is to repeat my whole @@#$%^& question back to me and sit there and look like a dumb $hit. I do not need to hear my friggin question over, I want a response! I hear it all the time, especially in question and answer classes. Just answer the F U C K I N G question???????? LOL, Having fun yet? I hope your response is not.....uh...uh having fun yet.....uh uh uh....lets see uh uh Retarded big time. As they said on Animal house.. OUT with it! (puke) LOL |

My suggestion is to go ahead and have it painted because when your car paint fades there is no saving it. When you have it painted be sure there is no orange peel etc. and have two coats of clear put on.
With this just be sure to keep your car out of the sun and covered if it is. Also make sure there are no chemicals or fumes that come around your car because sometimes this can make paint flake or fade. But with the two coats of clear on it you should'nt have any more problems asuming you get your car painted. |
