exhaust manifold red hot need help

I just drove my 240 around the block and came back to my house for a test run with my SR and my exhaust manifold was smoking. I put four ice cubes on it to cool it down over a 20 minute period. Has this happened to anyone else?

No it doesn't backfire at all and it sounds great. I just took a look at it this morning and I saw a little bit of burnt oil on the side of the valve cover so I guess it is going on the manifold and heating it. I will have to get new cams anyways so I might as well wait to put a new gasket on.

i wouldn't put ice cubes on it anymore, your manifold may crack because of the extreme high temperature to extreme low temperature change. Check your a/f ratios. Have you had your manifold a long time or what?

Nissan_Convert is absolutly right. I saw a guy hose down a hot engine and the exaust mainifold shattered right there...not like glass, but we heard a snap, cracked it. I was saying to him, stay off the exaust...CRACK...too late..

Oil on a manifold will smoke and stink. Check very carefully for oil leaks. Make sure your V/C gasket is not leaking onto the exaust maifold. Won't catch fire but smokes and smells bad. Makes a mess as well.

When toerqueing the camcomver/valvecover, do not overtorque. If you put too much torque on the screws and do not bolt it on in sequence (opposing bolts , corners to middle to others), you will cause a leak due to crushed gasket and warped cover. I think the spec is in INCH pounds, not ft pounds of torque. They are not to be turned down tight, just very snug.
