SR20 problems opinions helpful

Ok this is what happened. I got my SR running great for 5 days after a long time of hard work. I was driving on the highway and all of a sudden the power shut off. I couldn't get it started so I called the tow truck. They towed it to Pep Boys which was close by for them to work on it. Well they have no idea what an SR is so they didn't touch it. They brought it out and I noticed the turbo downpipe was of the turbo. All the bolts worked there way out and disconnected. So I put them all back and started it. It starts but doesn't run right. It bogs untill the turbo carrys it and smells like it is dumping fuel. I have terrible low end power and it makes whirring sounds. Anyone have any ideas what could make this happen and what I could do to fix it. My friend thinks the A/F mixture isn't right. I think timing. Any idea's?

People run open exhaust all the time...a loose downpipe isn't gonna hurt the way ur SR runs. You might loose a little bottom end but thats it.

Sounds like your problem is elsewhere....

What is making the whirring sounds? Your turbo?

If it is bogging out, you could be running very rich. If you want to confirm this you could check your spark plugs. Assuming you put new ones in( you should have) when you did the swap, they should still look brand new.

Is it bad now when you rev it? Or is it just at idle? I have problems with my idle right now, but it revs fine.

It sounds like a lawn mower engine at idle and running and it shakes like crazy. And it was the downpipe that is on the turbo that disconnected not the downpipe that goes to the cat. It literally came off the turbine. Anyway is there a way I can get it to regulate the fuel better. Get it to not run so rich. Because I smell fuel all thruout the car.

Quick story, than I will tell you why it is significant:

I am driving late at night, with a broken water pump. On a short trip, my car overheats to the point that my spark plug wires melt. I burn a lot of oil, and the car starts up fine the next day. As soon as it is warm, it sounds like a motorcycle and has no power. Problem: DEAD CYLINDERS!

You may have a problem with your ignition system. to check this, start the engine and open the hood. Pull your spark plug wires one at a time, and than replace them. Every time you pull a plug wire, your engine should shake a lot, and sound pretty weird. If when you pull one, nothing changes, than you have a spark plug that is not firing. If that is the case, than replace all four to see if it was fouled. Also inspect the plug wires. One other way to test for a non-firing cylinder is to hold a piece of paper in front of your exhaust with one hand, above the muffler. If the paper just bends and stays pretty still, you are ok. If it moves back and fourth, you are missing fire in at least one cylinder.

cylinder #1 isn't firing. I pulled the plug on the coilpack and it stayed sounding retarded. How do I fix it. I don't know which wires are for the coilpack.

Did you try new spark plugs yet??

If not do it.

What do you mean you dont know what wires are for the coilpack?? They are right on top of the valve cover. You would have had to move them to pull the coil/plug wire.

I am not trying to scare you, but do you know what a rod knock sounds like? My KA24e had one right before its untimely death. I didn't care because my SR was on the way but...

Ok my spark plugs are fine. The HKS ones I got look ok, a little black but still ok. I fixed my cylinder problem, some of my wires got melted due to an idiot telling me I have to extend all of my wires instead of only the necessary ones. The turbo melted around 4 or them. So I rerouted them the way they should be and I have a new problem now. All cylinders work now but there is alot of smoke coming from the engine. It smells like gas. Could this just be buildup of the gas that wasn't burned from the cylinder not working before?
