big problem with suspension! help!

i bought this parts s13 240 for 200 bucks, reason being it has Eibach sportlines on it, and brand new OEM shocks. so i get it home and immediately rip off the shocks/springs, and swap them with my worn stock bits. everything's fine until i do the rear left one. i'm tightening it down on my car, and one of the bolts on top SNAPS OFF. it doesn't upset me too badly, though, as it's off a junker, and i can just swap the plate the bolt is attached to off my old shocks, no problem. so i get a spring compressor from autozone and compress the spring, and then get out my trusty long 17mm socket, and attempt to take off the top bolt that holds everything together... and instead of loosening, it just spins. the nut and the bolt it's attached to just spin freely, independent of everything else on the assembly. how the hell do i get it off?

hold the shock firmly so it doesn't spin while you're spinning the ratchet. it can be a pain, but vise-grips with a towel (you don't wanna damage the shock shaft) can help.

Is that corner of the car on a jack? If so, let it down...loosen the bolt....then jack it up again and go from there.

If you don't want to risk damaging the shaft with the vice grips you might want to use an adjustable wrench to hold the top of shaft (right above the nut) and use an open ended wrench to turn the nut until it's loose. Hopefully by the time you run out of room to use the adjustable wrench(to hold the shaft still), the bolt is loose and not stuck on messed up threads or else you will really have to use the vice grips.

a lot of times, the rod will still spin, because there really isn't any tension on it at ride height. Really on when the piston is stroking, and then still minimal.
