Mountain/Canyon Run....YES!!!!
I was thinking bout some good spots to really run and drive my car. I decided to check out the canyon sized mountain that i've been living next to for 10 years!!! So i drove up there, and it is the perfect spot! There is very very small amount of traffic, and if i go at the crack of dawn, there's virtually none. Lemme just tell you with all the twists and turns this mountain is pretty damn fun. Newayz, running uphill was cool, i didn't go too fast but the downhill part was just downright exhilirating. Let me tell you there's nothing like losing complete control and then panicking to regain it all back (a.k.a amateur drifting) on a freaking mountain!! haha, but any turn that i even attempted to drift was very very wide. Most of the time i was just runnin that 240 as hard as i could and lemme just say that this car handles, RWD owns.
Question. While i was going downhill, my speeds were around 45-65. I kept the gears around 2nd and 3rd, is this how i should be doing it? alotta times i wanted to go into 4th, but figured it better to stay in 3rd because of the downhill and oncoming turns. As for the car, it only has an Injen intake (came with it when i bought it) an aftermarket exhaust(Sebring), and aftermarket suspension, it's lowered a bit. Would be pleased to take any tips or advice... next upgrade: bucket seats ![]()

It's great that you found a place that you like to run. I am not for it nor am I against it. Long as you always have safety in mind. Not that I am stingy and don't want to share, but I wouldn't spell out the location on any forums. You never know who's reading the posts. Just because you were excited that you found a place to run, now others who wishes to check it out will either run into a crowd or cops. Just something I wish you had thought about before...

heh yah you're right, i edited out the location, i was just too excited about it all hehe. it can be quite the rush, i didn't realize how hard i was gripping the wheel until we got to the bottom! but yah i can see how dangerous it can get and i'm not going any faster until i have better skillz and/or i know the area better and/or i don't endanger others.

I though jersey had some serious hills and mountains. I would go find them...but be safe as always!
Make damn sure you got some killer brakes. The 240SX stock brakes are barely up to the task with serious 5K RPM D shifting and using the p brake. It takes it all. next mod..Q45 front brakes. nice to have the go...but if you cant get the slow...you are toast. |

every single road where i live except in towns is a "mountain run". yeah its scary when you lose control downhill huh, just think how scary it is when you go off the side. My advice is that if you want to continue safely, learn that road well (conditions-all seasons) so that you can drive very fast and confident (always room to improve, takes years). once you have mastered the feel of your car and the road, you are ready. The way i learned to do it best is to keep a very fast pace, and not slow down very much. Requires lots of coordination.
btw: i have been off a cliff at least 3 times, near death, needless to say you live you learn from your mistakes. but remember it only takes one wrong move at speed to total your car and/or your life. |

3 times??? crazy. but yah i'm definitely taking it as safe as a canyon run can get, i don't wanna hurt nobody else. And bill you're right, i forgot how much strain it can be on the brakes going downhill, gotta get those next heh. definitely gonna get used to the road and the car ofcourse, i'd rather learn from other people's mistake then run off the cliff (3 times?!?!) Must be a strain on the wallet hehe

Running uphill is safe, running downhill without experience is next to near retarded. It doesnt matter if you are into "drift" or "grip," you are not supposed to panic and give into any form of adrenaline.. you are supposed to be cool, calm, and collect. Learning the roads, mastering your line, and being in-touch with your car requires many many hours of experience (how about years worth of hours). So, be careful. |

Sounds awesome.. We did some mountain roads at the convention.. AWESOME.. russ bit a ditch, and fubar'd his right fender.. definately dangerous.
Brakes - good pads are your friend. seriously, with a set of good pads, you will never fade the 240 brakes on the street. call carbotecheng.com and tell them that you need to be able to stop. lol ![]()

Good tires are your friend, too... I've had a friend roll his S13 down 400 ft. due to crappy tires, and I was passenger in a car that was left hanging off a cliff due to - yet again - bald tires.

Just remembered I have pics of the S13 I mentioned in my previous post... Here they are (about two years old, I think).
![]() ![]() understeer.. ![]() Both he and his passenger were fine, although the car rolled 400ft and flipped 10 times down a hillside... 20 more ft. and there was a sharp drop-off and a 100ft. deep ravine. He has two S13's now ![]()

DDDaaaanng!! that s13 is soo toast! This is what i mean. Its fun to do some nice touge runs, but kept it within reason. Ive also crashed a car up in the mountains, not fun. Dont push your car near the limits; this is not a track but a public road. Sometimes i guess people have to learn it the hard way and thank god some of use come out of it alive to talk about it.

We do midnight runs every once in a while....used to be every weekend w/ at least 6 cars strong.
Those who know us know where our run is, those who dont never will unless they meet up. We organized a cruise last year on a VERY known road, but this wasn't a "run" it was just for fun. Try to keep it safe....It always helps to have everyone that's driving have a walkie talkie like we do.

Please keep your activity low profile and don't push it.
In other words, don't let too many people know about your roads and don't go beyond your limits and crash. Also, be mindful of other drivers and houses around the area. I am tired of seeing increased police patrols that are getting tighter over the last couple years...I don't want to get a ticket again because some OTHER guy was seen doing some weird crap. |
