Rb20 problems

I am having a few problems and since a full rebuild is looking like a good possibility at the moment i was wondering if you guys can tell me what these problems might be from..

1. I am hearing a high whining pitch coming from the alternator. It is making the belt hot... i believe it has to do with too much voltage going to the alternator

2. I am getting 138-145 across all cylinders of except im getting around 90 on the 2nd cylinder and there is thick black smoking coming from the exhaust.

What did your "full rebuild" consist of? How does the motor run; Bogs, idles, sucks ass? Does it build boost?

Your alternator may be on too tight, have you tried loosening it? What's your voltage reading? The whining may be coming from the timing belt. It could be off centered or too tight.

When I took off my timing belt to swap out my water pump, I adjusted it too far back (too close to the head) on the cam gears and it was grinding on water pump. Shit sounded like a supercharger.

i agree with panda.. this is a common mistake.. as for the low compression in #2 cylinder, you might have a collapsed ring .. or if you got a cheap rebuild kit it might be " ovaled ".. this is a very common problem in ebay kits/knock off kits...

yeah i think its alittle too tight i tried adjusting it today and the screeching was getting less and less high pitched. The problem i was facing is that the lower harness i was supplied with didnt have a ground to the block so no electricity was flowing through it.. so i bought a negative battery end and connected one end to the block and and snipped the terminal and applied the cable to the terminal. As for the 2nd cylinder i was thinking about taking off the head and machining the head in fear of a bent valves.

It builds boost, searched for vaccum leaks and have yet to find one. No check engine light.
The retard who had the engine before me linked up the coolant and oil return lines so I was thinking maybe he rusted out something.

in my opinion, bent valves wouldnt be the problem.. once you bend one, they rest follow quickly because they dont bend for no reason.. normally its piston contact againt the valve.. so the rest would have dont the same thing.. i could be wrong about this but thats how it happened on 2 of my cars.. lol.. i wouldnt be surprised if the piston ring was gapped wrong or it was ovaled out due to cheap products.. i know this sounds like a stupid question but have you checked to make sure your getting spark and fuel? fouled plug?? also if you had a bent valve, you would hear it threw the intake hardcore because as the cylinder tries to compress the gas and air, it would just shoot back threw the head via bent valve..

Yeah im replaced the plugs, checked the wires, fuses, and all wiring going to the coil(s). check the camshaft position sensor and the crank case position sensor. I am getting spark to the plugs and i am getting fuel.. I checked my fuel pump and i believe that it might not be delivering enough or my coil packs are bad. I am looking into pulling the head off and getting it machined and then checking to see the if the O rings are bad.

Any other ideas what might cause this problem?

yeah i fixed the low compression after doing the complete block rebuild and chaning out the old fuel injectors/coilpacks with new ones. Got straight compression across the board..

And the alternator had debris stuck in it and the belts were too loose.. so after cleaning it i got it to run prime. Fixed the crescent thing in the back of the valve cover so no more tiny oil leak (wasn't a bad leak but still wanted it to run perfect).
Changed the hose from the powersteering into a heat vented one so it wont tear from excess use.

I hooked up the electric fans into the old relays (fan 1 is hooked up to low fan and fan 2 is hooked up to high fan) of the car so now they are engaged electrically after adding a sensor to the radiator wall so that it controls the temperature of the water flowing throughout the engine.

I let the car run for hours and it didnt overheat or even budge from the half way mark.

fix the "thick black smoke"? that is def fuel. oil smoke is white. if its black then your running rich... which if you said your fuel pump isnt supplying enough... makes no sense? check your injector o rings, those tend to cause cars to run like poop.
