Help- Gutless Acceleration

When I bought my 92 SE Hatchback a couple weeks ago, the car was only firing on 3 cylinders, the problem turned out to be a bad injector which I had repaired. But when accelerating the car feels very slow until a very noticeable increase in power at about 5800-6000rpm which by then is just about time to upshift. Last weekend I unplugged the battery to try to reset the ECU, and at first I thought it may have helped, but now im begenning to doubt that it did. My buddy and I also replaced the cap and rotor which looked a little worn. I wasn't expecting this car to be fast, but I still don't think its running like it should. I dont know if it has anything to do with running on 3 cylinders for awhile or what. We looked at the MAF and it didnt seem to dirty. Timing may be a possibilty, what should the stock timing be at? Im pretty baffled here. Thanks,

Mike

haha thats way far out of powerband. you should start to feel a large increase around 3000 rpm and then die off above 5500 rpm. check the obvious's. fuel filter, air filter, make sure the AIV valve is functioning properly. check that all the sensors are hooked up correctly. check that the cat convertor isn't clogged up and choking the motor.

Any other noticible noises or is the motor shaking. Try running a compression test. But first definately replace fuel filter and all other cheap things that tend to go.

no not really, other than that it seems to run pretty smooth except for a little valvetrain/timing chain? rattle. The weird thing, is that hesitation-sporadic running seems to happen only at WOT and not while driving normally.

The timing chain rattle is normal. All 240's timing chains are loud.

air filter, fuel filter, already been said...both these can make a huge difference.
check the wiring on your mafs. Check that the cat isn't clogged up, if it is your manifold will be getting read hot and shit. check your timing, its often out of whack. a few degrees of advance might help you.
buy some carb cleaner and clean up your throttle body (made a big difference on my car when I cleaned off all the gunk). Change the spark plugs, check the wires.
thats all I can think of right now. sorry that some of it is a repeat.

Might not be the whole cause but I recall someone on FA (mav?) replaced one of the temp. sensors and it brought back some lost hp in the midrange. If you go to Fresh Alloy forums search for his post on the Pro Racer Exh. I think it was in that post.

Actually it is hard to crank sometimes, the funny thing is that after it sits the longest like when I leave for school around in the morning after its been sitting all night, it usually starts right up, but a lot of the other times I go to start it, it seems to have a little trouble cranking, but it always fires up eventually. I dont know if this would have something to do with the other problem. Fuel pump maybe??
