sr20 overheating problem

I just installed a temperature gauge on my upper radiator hose. Theres no leaks or anything anywhere, I put in new coolant and im letting the car idle to get all the bubbles out of the system. Well When it stops bubbling and then I see the coolant flowing and then soon after coolant just seems to start coming out of the top of the radiator and its steaming like crazy also and my gauge just continues to rise I have done this a few times now, I turned the car off before 210 degress, I dont get what is happening. I never had this problem before installing the gauge, I know I was never over heating, any help please?

Your thermostat frozen?
Sounds like car isnt circulating the coolant

+1 check your hose after it starts heating up(upper hose going to the thermostat). Squeeze it, if its bloated and firm it because your thermostat hasn't opened after the car has warmed up. If that's the case then your thermostat needs to be changed.

That's because this isn't true!

If the only thing you changed was, adding the gauge then nothing changed, you just have the visual of numbers instead of a line gauge. The outlet temps are always higher than the inlet temps. This location gives you a forewarning of the engine's temp. What you need to do is compare the ECT sensor readings to your aftermarket gauge. The difference in temps is now your map. That's what you should've watched to find out, if you were actually overheating.

Use a consult program to view ect sensor.
Make sure you installed the thermostat correctly
Drop old T-stat in boiling water monitor the temp it opens.
Get control of your fans, or shroud the clutch fan better.

My dash gauge never worked. But there was never steam coming out of my radiator as there is now. Well it actually happened once when i refilled with mostly water about 2 weeks ago and then it went away the next day. the t stat is in correctly. My e fan is all i have and it isnt working right now i need to reconnect a wire, but i think the car should be able to idle without a fan and not overheat. the coolant starts coming out of the rad cap and steaming whether the cap is on or off.
Somebody else mentioned my radiator could be clogged from oxidizing, so i was going to replace that tomorrow and see

Try a new rad cap. Sounds like it's not holding pressure. The cooling system is designed to work under pressure.
