I'm getting a valve noise at idle. I wonder how much a valve job would be to fix up this problem.

Is it dangerous for the engine?

I HAVE 3 240'S THEY ALL DO IT IN FACT MOST 4 CYLINDERS HAVE A VALVE TICKING. AS LONG AS YOUR NOT USING MUCH OIL THEN MOST LIKLEY THE SEALS ARE FINE. BETTER TO BE LOOSE THEN TO TIGHT WHEN IT COMES TO VALVES

Do you have a sohc? The ka24e has a hydralic valve setup that requires no adjustment. Because of this, the valvetrain tends to be a bit noisier.

You may also want to check your fuel injectors, they can be pretty noisy and mistaken for valve noise. Best thing to do is to take a screwdriver or a piece of wood, put one end on the engine part and the other against your ear.. See where the noise is coming from.

You can get a stock valve job for around $200 bucks.

I have a DOHC

It's a small klicking noise, mostly noticeable when idling. You don't hear it when the engine is revving..

Could it be something else?

If I'm not burning any oil, should I open up the engine to fix the problem?

Could easily be a timing chain guide. You usually won't hear it when revving because the engine drowns it out, so it will be most noticable at idle. Also, what weight oil are you running?

You might check this out... It is something to look into. It sounds mostly like the timing chain guides if anything though. Hope that helps...

I change my oil around each 3000 miles so that isn't a problem...

I still get that noise when the engine is warm... I'll try switching to 5W 30 in next oil change...

Like I said, probably a timing chain guide issue. Something to try... you say it is hard to hear when not at idle. If it is loud enough (like mine), you should be able to drive by a concrete wall or under a walled bridge and hear the ticking echo off of the wall, even though you can't hear it straight from the engine. Just a thought :-)

I don't think it's that loud but I'll pay more attention...

Should I change the guides? Is it real expensive?

Unfortunately, a timing chain job is very expensive. Because you have a DOHC, though, it might just be your top guide. Basically, Nissan put a crappy one on the top and then eventually just took it off. You don't even need it. This doesn't apply to the SOHC engines, unfortunately If that were the case, you could probably take care of it yourself...

the sound I hear is some sort of clicking... I paid close attention today and the sound seems to dissappear when the car is rolling... I can't tell 100% sure, but that's what it seems to do...

If the chain breaks while the engine is running, would the damage be very extensive?

HaLo-

Yeah, the damage could be very extensive... talking new engine in extreme cases Does the noise go away as soon as the car starts rolling? For instance, can you roll at just a couple miles per hour and put it in neutral, and the noise is gone? If it just goes away when you drive, maybe you should look at your oil pressure. It may just be a little low on idle and not tension the chain enough to keep it from hitting the guide. If it goes away at a very slow roll in neutral, though, I doubt that's the problem.

'cause i saw a post about doing the guide for the lower thingie it was like 1100 bucks, that i don't have...

meowth-

1100 bucks was a dealer price I think :-) You should be able to get a complete timing chain job done for 400-500 bucks, but if it is just the top guide, it's nothing like that (can probably do it yourself pretty easily)... Look at that link I listed above. And timing chain ticking can come from more than a loose guide... it may just not be tensioning correctly for some other reason, like an oil pump...

Actually, it goes away with revving... rev over 1200RPM and the sound is gone... under 1000 RPM and you hear very distinctively... I can role on neutral and hear it if my rpms drop under 1000...

damn this is complicated... I wish some of you guys could hear it but I'm livin' so far away... (Canada)....

I'll try to tape the sound and post a link to it.
