good tranny oil

i heard that im supposed to use gl4 inside a SR tranny cuz it corrodes the syncros so i was wondering wats a good brand and place to get gl4 oils? I checked at a few autozones and they were all gl5... ive been hearing all these different stories about gl5 being better and an upgrade of gl4 but then i hear that its bad for our trannies... so whats the deal.... can i run gl5? is it safe to run it? if not, which gl4 brand would u recommend for hard shifting and track use? thanks for the help.

If you searched, you would have found a ****load of results on this.
It's been covered over and over (hell, i even was searching for this months ago when i wanted to change my MT fluid).

A simple advanced search of "tranny fluid" yielded 20 results.
"transmission fluid" got me 8 results.

at least 25% of those threads include posts on MT fluid recommendations.

..

Anyways.. You would be best off using Redline transmission fluid.

I went with Redline MT90 (which is 75W-90 GL4) for my transmission. But, I live in CA where it never goes below 50 degrees, and somebody told me that it's okay to use this thickness for my climate.

Well, you're in SF, so I guess it would be okay to use that viscousity. (although I don't know much about viscousity)

I haven't had any problems with this gear oil, but I do have to say, you will notice that it feeels way better in warmer weather than in cold mornings.
I notice a difference.

That's just minor though, the stuff works great. It's better than the stock 80W90 Penzoil nissan uses.

GL5 will only eat the synchros it water is mixed to it...

Now, since a tranny is supposed to be somewhat sealed, water should not be found in there... And hence, GL5 will be okay.

I spoke with a Motul representative and he garanteed me that his GL5 will not eat up my SR synchros... So I got Motul Gear 75w90...

Yeah, when I drained my shockproof fluid, it was as red as the day I put it in. No grinds chips, or metal flakes. Just rather not used something that heavy when it's not required.

Actually, the full chemical reaction is:

Sulfur (found in GL5 oils) + Water + Brass = bad

But you need all 3 elements. If you don't have the water, then, you're ok.

GL5 is just a new standard in lubrication, exceding GL4 standards.

I use Redline ShockProof Ultralight, the tranny is staying together so it must be working. You should be able to find it or order it at a speedshop for 13-15$ a qrt.

Three diff types of shockproof.

-heavyduty
-lightweight
-ultra light
