My 89 SOHC transmission makes this grinding and whirling noise when i'm in neutral and the clutch pedal is not depress. It also makes this noise while i'm driving. The noise is really loud and annoying but the transmission shifts fine. The transmission would only stop making this noise when the car is not moving and the clutch pedal is depress. So is it the throw out bearing, or my transmission is going bad??

have you checked/changed fluid ??? i had a whirling sound in mine and turns out i was leaking tranny fluid so it was low. added fluid and fixed where it was leaking from and no more sound since then.

i've always believed that noise was the release bearing. replace it when you need a new clutch.

I have a similar noise but it only happens when my car is cold and clutch is half depressed in gear, anyhow I was told that it was the pilot bearing so you might want to check that.

i thought the only time the release bearing would make noise is when the clutch pedal is depressed and the gear is in neutral..

how would the to bearing make noise when the clutch pedal is depressed? It is most likley the to bearing because it makes noise when it is in motion (touching the pressure plate) and stops when you press the pedal.
