![]() Ok, im gonna start this off by saying sorry for sounding like an idiot...but I'm hear to learn and the only "stupid question" I have would be one I didn't ask, but anyway. I'd like to do a set of pulleys on my car. I know they'd free HP by giving me less rotational weight, but which company makes the best, cost-effective set for ALL the pulleys in the KA24DE. I'm also curious about not only the pros, but also the cons about putting a set like this on, ie power loss, explosion-prone, etc... Is the $350-$500 for the accessory pulleys and crank pulleys worth it?
Also not really sure if this is my next step, in upgrading... I'm going just for 175-200 hp on NA before I switch to turbo. I'm only building this for experience, not cost effectiveness. So far all I have done is an Injen intake, OEM cat, HKS Hiper cat back, NGK plugs and Accel wires |

just get a crank pulley and an alternator pulley. If you have a high watt stereo this will caust problems though as the alt will be underdriven.

Shouldn't you be driving a buggy?
I have a ASP crank pulley and it takes off in the higher end now. Revs more freely too. Some magazine did a dyno test and lost no hp but gained the higher the rpms.

Unorthodox was the only company that made a full set but the accesssories are now discontinued. Buy either a UR or ASP crank pulley and move on.

Anywho, I'd just buy a ebay crank pulley. Full pulley sets, and an individual crank pulley, usually are going to be underdriving to around the same percentage. Since underdriving is where you are getting your good gains, it doesn't really matter if you get a full set. Unless you just want an uber-responsive engine. EDIT: I just wanted to add, sometimes getting stuff from "cheaper" companies can get you screwed, but more often than not, it just gets you money left over to buy more parts. Alot of parts on my S13 are from "cheap" companies, and I haven't had any problems with anything. Actually, for a while I had my Megan Racing cat-back, I was only using the very back hangers on the can, and no other support on any of the exhaust besides my OBX header bolted to the motor. I just went back in to put in new rubbers, to keep the exhaust higher, and while I was doing that I inspected all the welds on the header (obx), test pipe (MR), and cat-back (MR). There where no signs of stress, and they all looked great. Now, I'm not saying you can't get screwed. Obviously, they aren't spending as much money for R&D etc, but alot of times you can get a good part for little money.

As far as the turbo comment....well I was still half asleep. I meant the turbo shaft. ![]() I was actually tempted to buy the ebay crank pulley for my new 91 240, but I think I'm just gonna wait cause I really would hate to buy that part, put it on, something goes wrong, and then I'm screwed out of 50 bucks. Don't get me wrong I have bought quite a few knock off parts in the past, for my cars and my friends cars, and the worst item I can honestly say was the OBX FPR(fuel pressure regulator) they had on ebay about two years ago. This thing looks cool in chrome, but once I got it on, my car wouldn't idle correctly!! And thanks to the crappy instructions (one piece of paper with a picture on it, no words!!) I couldn't figure out why the pressure adjusting screw wouldn't work!! It was crap. So I got rid of it but I felt I wasted my 70 hard earned bucks. So really my advice....get the cheaper parts if that's all you can afford, but don't be surprised if they take a crap on you or don't work properly from the start.

Ok I was checking at the performance shop around my town, and they have a set from UR with 3 pulleys...forget hat they go to, know its NOT the crank pulley for like $200..and I know UR has the crank pulley for like $250...buy the whole set and put them all on, or just the alt and the crank?
BTW, I used to drive a buggy...but I wanted more than just 1HP...so I bought a Nissan |

I would also agree that 200 bucks for 3 hp is silly....however does anyone know how the pulley effects the entire powerband???
Sometimes people get to sucked into the entire peak HP thing...If i knew a certain part would gain me 15 to 20 hp from 3800 to 6500, but not make me any more peak power, I'd still buy it, as it's gaining that much more power per rpm down low.... The only true answer can be found at the dynograph....that same 200 dollars people consider silly for 3 peak HP may be the difference of a car length or 2 faster in the midrange where it gains power over stock... |

Here's a link to an old Import Tuner power page from 2002. The only difference is that they used the entire pulley kit.
http://importtuner.com/tech/0210it_powerpages/ Check out THOSE numbers!! Definitely worth the money.

That's one hell of a power gain from a stock engine when they tested the pulleys. Not too bad for a gain overall with the 3 parts, going from 129 to into the 150's with only puleys, intake and an exhaust. So I'm definatly going with a pulley set, I dont give a shit about power loss from my alternator since I dont have a banger system in it anyway, all that shit does is attract broke people anyway. So out of the companies...which should I go for for a complete set of all 4?

Good research on the topic...
Along with the article, IMO the pulleys are worth it...I installed a UR "SS" pulley on my turbo altima and noticed a difference in the midrange...granted my 'ass dyno' isn't always the best method in terms of actual power output, what it is best for is creating a bigger grin on my face when I know my new bolt on made a difference As for pulleys, you could always check out the Enjuku Racing pulleys that they sell on their site....about 100 less than the greddy set, and I believe lighter as well!! Always remember, peak HP means nothing...it's all about the powerband gain! |
