DOT5 = no no for a street car...
Valv synpower is the best off the shelf in youre regular auto stores... if you're looking for something more, try Ate super blue/gold... seems to be the consensus. |

I've used Ate Super Blue and another random Dot4 and they both seemed to work fine at HPDE's with relatively hard braking with Hawk HPS pads. I'd like to hear from people that run race oriented setups like wide sticky tires, racing pads, and have high power. I've heard some good things about one of the Motul brake fluids.

Motul RBF600 for the hardcore racer, Motul DOT 5.1 for the others...
Nothing else!

Great Link
http://www.evilplastic.com/bfluid.htm
^ to the poster above...why?? Maybe because exotic cars have brake hardware that isdesigned to handle that type of fluid (i.e. prevent moisture absorption)? And normal cars were designed for DOT 3 or 4.

When DOT5(silicone) meets DOT 3/4 it gels. clogging your brake lines like cholesterol. You can only use DOT5 on cars that have it already or brand new virgin lines and brakes.
DOT4 is just like DOT3 version 2.0. All DOT3 cars can run DOT4 but, DOT4 cars will Boil DOT3 fluid. It's a good idea to run DOT4 if you are doing any hard driving or performance pads. DOT3/4 play well together but you should still flush all that old shit out anyways.

my datsun 1972 240z (Way before DOT 5) was designed for dot 3 and it now has dot 5.... Get a good vacuum pump and ac flush and run it through the system before you fill it up.
There is nothing in the DOT 5 that will effect your stock brake system.... ohh yeah and its been in my car for the past 3 months, so if anything was going to fail it would have already.

I have to make a correction to my posts.... stupid me should have read the whole bottle before posting. Its Hydrotex DOT 5.1 not DOT 5. I get this stuff from work and its billed to us as DOT 5 which is the confusion factor. My bad for the misprint.... Carry on.
Ohh yeah and DOT 5 is good stuff because it doesn't soak up water... but the water will pool in any low spot in the brake system causing a brake system imbalance and spot corrosion. DOT 5 is Good on 100% sealed systems that see minimal race use.

Yes, DOT 3, 4, and 5.1 are all compatible, but DOT 5 is NOT! DOT 5 is silicone as mentioned and doesn't not work in a system that has had DOT # or DOT 4. Only way to use DOT 5 is in a brand new system. The other downside to DOT 5 is like posted above, it doesn't absorb water so the water pools in the low spots and can rust out the lines. On a street car, use DOT 3,4,or 5.1. Personally, I'm using Ate Super Blue. From what I've found, it's the most streetable high performance brake fluid.
