How do I get my speedometer to work again?

OK, I have an s13 sr, and i broke the tranny. So I bought a new one, after putting it in, when I went to look at the sensors, I found out that the speed sensor was capped, (like factory cover plate with seal). So I pulled it out, and stuck my speed sensor in there. Didnt bother to look to see if any gears are in there for my speed sensor to turn.
Well I finished the tranny swap, and now I do not have a speed signal. This makes me believe that it is an s15 5speed tranny, from na sr.

Does anyone know if I can put in a s14 speed sensor and will it work? Did nissan get rid of the gears back their completely and just keep the same casting?
