I have a 89 240 with an SR20DET motor and when I start it up it does not idle well. also when it gets warmed up black smoke comes from the exhaust. Does anyone know what could cause this?

had the same problem and my timing was off. now it works great after i adjusted it.

You are running very rich. Try adjusting your timing. If timing is ok check the 02 sensors. After the 02s, check the mafs. Also a list of mods (if any) will help to try and narrow it down.
