Has anyone that has done the SR swap passed CA smog?

I keep hearing that you shouldn't even try it.

I'm doing the swap but I wanna know if I can.

Thanx!

you just have to have the right amount of money. technically it should pass the tail pipe exam but not the visual exam...but some places dont even look...

I also am pretty sure their are more then a few places that wont even have shit of a clue that the engine isnt stock

drumroll please...

HOW TO PASS SMOG IN CALI WITH AN SR SWAP:

Step 1: Disconnect hood release cable.

Step 2: Remove/hide anything conspicous looking on the car like gauges, aftermarket rims, ect.

Step 3: Find an attractive female that you are on friendly terms with.

Step 4: Explain to her the situation. Have her take the car in to get smogged, and have her tell the attendant that "her hood is broken" and she doesn't know anything about cars, and can't afford to have it fixed, because all her money goes to college or something like that. Hopefully they will let it go. Make sure she understands that she has to go to a male attendant for this to work. Preferably a younger, guilable-looking male.

good point, attrictive girl that drives stick!? pigs fly too!

heck, don't eveny worry, just borrow your mama's mini skirt and put on some makeup and a wig...

from what i understand, you can lean out your a/f ratio and let it pass easy. maybe throw on a cat? iirc the silvia has absoultly no smog control. thus no cat... i could b wrong.

other than that, it's the visual crap that'll let u down...

Average price in cali to get a under the table smog is about $150 for a 240sx. That's cheap too. FD cost $300.

So hypothetically speaking, let's say that I have an SR swap in my hypothetical 240sx. How would I go about looking for a shop that will pass my 240sx? I'm assuming just driving up and saying "dude, will you pass my car for $150?" probably isn't going to work?

Should I pay for the pre-smog test first and see what they say about the engine?

well, just talking to them is another way, to pay your way out. go find smaller businesses for that kinda under the table stuff. don't go to stuff like ARCO's gas station for the tests. and don't ask them on the phone, go in person.

Smog is required every other year.

It's a PITA they do a visual and put the car on a dyno and run it at different RPM levels. Another reason why it sucks to modify your car in Cali.

i'd e-mail someone from mckinneymotorsports...they may be in a better situation than most people to answer this subject...mainly because they do the swap and are located near/in san diego...(damn...i wish i was home right now)

The dyno test is only needed if you live in certain areas...mainly San Fran or LA. The rest of California is just the standard rod in the tailpipe stuff. There's a site where you can enter a Zip code and it will tell you what kind of smog test you will need. Forget what the addy though. Probably something like carb.org or some such thing.
